The United States’ Dependence on Foreign Energy
The United States is too dependent on foreign oil as an energy source, suffers a major financial crisis and needs to make some adjustments in order to remain competitive with foreign nations. “The lack of sustained attention to energy issues is undercutting both U.S. foreign policy and national security” (Independent Task Force 312). Energy suppliers like Russia, Iran and Venezuela, on the other hand, have a multitude of energy sources along with the ability and wellness to use their energy wealth in turn to develop stronger military forces and political power. The United States is finding that their rising dependency on foreign energy increases their growing dependency on essential energy, and puts the country at greater risks during times of war or conflict. This dependency also limits America’s ability to act upon a wide range of foreign policy. The United States has dug a hole for its residents and it seems like a bottomless pit. Currently prices for oil in America are higher than ever and this price increase is causing a nationwide financial crisis. As a result of this crisis, people have to pay more at the pump. Fuel cost in this country is currently estimated at around one hundred and forty dollars a barrel, and steadily rising. The U.S. simply needs to become more energy efficient, and needs to possibly increase domestic supplies of energy.
This nation needs to hold careless investors and politicians responsible for the problems that they have plagued the American public with. Some of these problems include increases in the price of food and the decreases in home values, all over the U.S. Gasoline prices today have soared to nearly four dollars a gallon, but the availability of credit for businesses has diminished.
