Agamede was cited by Homer as a healer in Greece before the Trojan War, but she was not the first woman healer. The first famous woman healer was written about in Egyptian times, around the year 2500 B.C., her name was Peseshet, and even though not much is known about her, it was said that she was an overseer of female doctors. What we do know is that she was way ahead of her time, and that she used herbs in new a different ways. Ways that even today we are still trying to understand.
Even though not much is known about Peseshet, some of the herbs she worked with are still known to us today. One of the first herbs known to us that she worked with is Cinnamon.
She used Cinnamon (Cinnamonum zeylanicum) as a way to help keep insulin and blood sugar levels under control . The active ingredient in Cinnamon that helps with this is a phytochemical called methyl hydroxy chalcone polymer, which help improve the way your body uses glucose, and makes the insulin receptors more sensitive.
This insulin like affect was known even in Peseshet's time, and yet it took us until the year 2006 to figure out how this works. Some doctors today even prescribe Cinnamon to help with this ailment, and have found that in some instances it can take the place of other medications.
One of the other things that she used Cinnamon for was the common cold. Mixed with a few other herbs, Cinnamon was able to relieve the symptoms of a cold, while also helping you get better.
It's active ingredient coumarin, was used as an internal antibacterial, and kind of worked as an antibiotic works in pill form today.
