The Truth About Global Warming
Over the past decade, the Global Warming scare has been sweeping the globe with the media blaming the world’s increasing temperatures on the releasing of carbon dioxide through the burning of fossil fuels. People are trying to save the world by going “green” and by releasing less carbon dioxide, but is Global Warming really caused by human activities? Human activities may not be the cause of Global Warming; it could just be the result of a cyclical change in the world’s weather.
For the past decade it feels like the media has been trying to embed the concerns of Global Warming into everyone’s heads. Almost everyday there is something in the news about how humans burning fossil fuels are causing the world to heat up in dangerous ways, but there has been few observations by the media that the warming of the world could just be natural. It seems that the media cannot keep their story straight. Inhofe, a United States senator from Oklahoma, states that, “Since 1895, the media has alternated between global cooling and warming scares during four separate and sometimes overlapping time periods” (2). Around the 1970’s, the media was warning the public about an upcoming ice age, but now they are trying to scare everyone with Global Warming. Here is an article from a 1975 edition of Newsweek Magazine: “There are ominous signs that the Earth's weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production with serious political implications for just about every nation on Earth" (Inhofe 4). This article was released during the time of the ice age scare. There have been many situations from media switching between global warming and global cooling. Could the earth’s warming just be a natural result as the world overcomes from the effects from its Little Ice Age that happened during the mid-nineteenth century?
