The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century

The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) is a monumental transportation policy that has begun to outline transportation policies and regulations while influencing new infrastructure in the United States. According to the Department of Transportation (1998), TEA-21 is a “landmark” act “improving safety, protecting public health and the environment, and creative opportunity for all Americans.” Such policies and regulations are important in order to maintain the economy while protecting workers, consumers and the environment. TEA-21 focuses on revolutionizing the transportation industry by implementing more universal, preventative safety measures, stricter environmental and public health regulations while creating more occupational possibilities for Americans (Dilger, 2003). TEA-21 regulates the safety during the transportation process. It has provisions that include incentives and grants for wearing seat-belts while operating a vehicle and attempts to limit drunk driving by urging companies to adopt a universal blood alcohol level limit (United States Department of Transportation, 1998). Further, it includes regulations that strive to “improve road and rail-highway grade crossing safety” by giving grants to reduce “road hazards” and increased protection and safety at railroad crossings across the United States (United States Department of Transportation, 1998). TEA-21 not only provides significant safety procedures and improvements, it also provides key environmental and public health improvements. In today’s society, more companies are “going green”. TEA-21 strives to protect the environment by creating firmer regulations to protect the environment. It provides increased funding for air quality improvements and the creations of vehicles that emit less pollution than current vehicles (United States Department of Transportation, 1998).
