There are three models of parenting, the authoritarian, the authoritative and the permissive. The authoritarian parent controls the child and has very little verbal exchange. Everything comes down to 'because I said so' with this kind of parent. This type of parenting often leads to a rebellious child who may grow up into an adult who has been so sheltered in their life that they can't function on their own.
The second style of parenting is known as authoritative. This parent places limits on the children and attempts to control them, and they allow alot of give and take. The children of these parents often grow up very well balanced and productive members of society who are very socially competent.
The third style is the permissive parent, this type of parent will allow their child to do as they please. There are two sides to this type of parenting, the neglectful permissive parent will allow their child to do whatever they want because they have their own problems to deal with, and don't allot any time to control and nurture their child. The indulgent permissive parent is overly involved in the childs life, but doesn't set many limits, they try to be the 'best friend'. The child is allowed whatever they want and grow up to have little self control and no respect for others because they are used to running free and doing as they please.
Growing up, I always wanted the best friend mom (indulgent permissive) and the dad who just stayed in the background but handed me money as I passed through. I got the complete opposite of those two things. I would classify my dad as slightly authoritatarian. In our household it was his way or the highway. If we got a bad grade, we knew better than to come home because we would be verbally torn to pieces and grounded from life as we knew it.
