The Terrible Causes and Effects of Depression
The Terrible Causes and Effects of Depression Depression is an illness or anxiety that causes a person to be overcome with sadness and question their worth. There are many different reasons for the causes of depression. Depression comes in many different forms and is not just known as depression. It also carries with it many different effects to people's lives. Depression occurs in people of all ages and genders. Depression is a terrible illness that harms many people in today's society. There are many reasons to why so many become depressed. The death of a loved one, or a death in the family sometimes causes a person to become very depressed. The divorce of one's spouse or even the breaking up of a boyfriend and girlfriend can cause deep depression. In the U.S. it is a fact that people who are unhappily married or divorced have a much higher rate of depression than those who are happily married. Also in some instances "depression can be caused or influenced onto a person based on there heredity"(Sept. 26 Depression.com). "A person who has had a relative with some form of depression, is more like likely to attain that type of depression than people who don't have a family history of depression"(Sept. 26 Depression.com). Some people become depressed after being diagnosed with cancer, because he or she thinks they may die or think people will see them differently, which causes them to be very depressed due to the illness. Depression is a terrible disorder that can lead to many negative effects on someone's life. There are actually quite a few different types, or states, of depression. "Bipolar disorder is a disease that is characterized by cycling mood change"(www.nimh.nih.gov. Sept 26.). "Major Depressive Disorder is a depression that hinders someone's ability to eat, sleep, gaining weight, and they have a hard time functioning normal throughout the day" (Behrman, Andy. Sept. 26. About.com. http://depression.about.com). Another type of depression is "Substance-Induced Mood Disorder, which is a depression caused by the abuse of alcohol, drugs, or medicine" (Sept. 26 Depression.com). "A long lasting depression is called Chronic Depression", and it takes away the enjoyment of previously enjoyable interests and feelings (Sept. 26 Depression.com).
The effects that depression has on someone's life can be disastrous. There are a lot of minor effects of depression, but there are also a lot of major life changing effects. A few of the minor effects may be lack of self confidence, persistent sadness, and mood changes. The more major symptoms can have a very negative effect on someone's life and their body. Some depressions drive people insane and they begin to harm themselves with the abuse of drugs and alcohol. Depression causes many suicides; it is probably one of the leading causes of suicides. If someone completely lacks confidence and doesn't care about there own self worth then they kill themselves to escape from their life of meaninglessness. Depression causes people to cut themselves, they think the pain will make them feel better and they think of it as an alternative way to deal with their problems. Depression not only affects the person with the illness but it also affects that person's friends and family in a negative way. If someone is going through depression they may tend to bring down people with them. If someone is depressed and is on the verge of killing them self they might even try to kill someone else who they do not like. You never know what they will do if they don't care about themselves and have nothing to lose. It causes more stress to an already stressed individual. It also causes the immune system become weaker, thus making people more vulnerable to illnesses. Depression is a very serious illness and it should be diagnosed and treated for immediately to prevent any harm to the person with depression. Depression is more likely to be obtained by some people than others. "It occurs twice as much in females than it does in males, this is mostly because of the change of hormones for instance: during pregnancy, during menstruation, and menopause" (Sept. 26 Depression.com). "Depression in men is relatively low, but males are also less likely to seek help even if they think they may suffer from depression" (Sept. 26 Depression.com). "Elderly people are more likely to be affected by because in time they lose the ones they love or may experience the death of their children" (Sept. 26 Depression.com). Depression is very low in children, because most don't know what is going on in their early years of life. People should immediately seek a doctor if they think they suffer from depression. Depression is actually very common in our society today and there are many people who have depression but are not seeking the help they need. Depression can affect anyone, anywhere in the world. The only thing that comes from depression is negativity and that is not healthy for anyone. Depression can either be short term or long term, most of that is based on how u respond to medication or how high your self confidence is. I personally believe if people have a lot of self confidence then he or she can easily get through any depression there is. Depression can be overcome and a lot of people actually do get over the depression and turn their lives completely around.
