The Gothic Style The tell tale heart By Edgar Allan Poe The tell tale heart The narrator’s deluded mind is reveled in the very beginning of the story, when he talks about his obsession with the old man’s eye. There was no specific cause, passion nor material benefit in murdering the old man, in fact, the narrator states that he loved the old man, and that the old man never did anything wrong to him. However, the killer, because of his deluded mind, perceived the old man’s eye as “that of a vulture '' a pale blue eye with a film over it,” which was enough for him to make up his mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid himself of the eye forever.
