The Symbols of Storytelling
The film Smoke Signals by Sherman Alexie, symbolism was valued throughout the film, depicting the emotions and thoughts of each character it gives a hint of the reality that the characters face and the history behind it.

Native American storytelling displays the lessons with symbols to be learned in life. Sherman Alexie displays this in the movie Smoke Signals, when Thomas has a natural gift of storytelling. Storytelling is a part of the Native American tradition that Thomas has really taken to heart. He takes every opportunity to tell people a story. In the film is is used to trigger flashbacks. These flashbacks are important in the film because it allows us to see the history of the tribes culture. In one significant flashback is the Fourth of July fire in the beginning of the film. This flashback/ story was consistently shown throughout the film, because the fire is an important key in understanding the characters in the film. During this part Thomas is also narrating and comparing children to flames and ashes. Thomas states, “You know there are some children who aren't really children at all, they're just pillars of flame that burn everything they touch. And there are some children who are just pillars of ash, that falls apart when you touch them... Victor and me, we were children of flame and ash.” (Smoke Signals) This really gives a key insight into what flames mean. The comparison throughout the whole movie with the two boys. Victor always seems to have an anger issue (mostly because his father left him) and Thomas just has such a sensitive and caring soul. It seems fitting that Thomas is the ashes because he was in the fire and lost everything, therefore he’d be the end result of the fire and its destruction. Victor is still the flame, because he has all of this anger pent up inside of him. His fire is still raging on and until he can come to terms with this, he will never get to ashes. One of the factors that help Victor come to terms

His gift of story-telling has the destructive, yet transformative power of fire. His stories are "built" out of "fire". As one of the "four elements", fire is used to cremate Victor's deceased father. Victor's gifts of story-telling and prophecy are ways of building a fire that, ultimately, leads to a spiritual resurrection of what was, at some point, only ashes. Thus, the story connotes that story-telling is closely allied to prophecy -- especially in the case of Thomas Builds-the-Fire. Throughout the story, Thomas "builds" a fire that, symbolically, consumes the body, allowing the spirit to resurrect after death and transformation. Thomas Builds-the-Fire can be recognized as a Native American shaman. Unfortunately, the rest of the tribe does not associate much with Thomas, because of his "strange", story-telling behavior. His gift of prophecy is not only unappreciated, but it goes completely…

The signal fire was a symbol of civilization, and the boys’ trying to be rescued. The fire’s smoke was a way to get passing ships to notice them. At the beginning the boys were all helping with letting the fire burn, but as the boys began to hunt like savages, the fire begins to die away, symbolizing their desire for rescue was low. Eventually, the signal fire does vanish when the boys joined Jack’s tribe. Ironically, a fire does save the boys, but it was not the signal fire. Instead it was Ralph’s death fire that attracted a Navy ship. The signal fire stood for a sign of rescue, but by the end none of the savage boys wanted to be saved.…

Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense. Symbols are used throughout literature to further explain a major theme. For instance, Ernest Hemingway uses many symbols in “Hills Like White Elephants”. In Hemingway’s short story, the main characters are a man referred to as “the American,” and a women referred to as just “the girl” and sometimes the nickname jig, both the American and the girl are discussing something important but as the readers we do not know exactly what the two characters are communicating about. The symbols used in the short story, such as the landscape, white elephants, the train, and the beaded curtain, gives the readers an…

The theme of a story is woven all the way through the story, and the characters' actions, interactions, and motivations. This is all reflected in the friendship between Victor and Thomas and the heritage between modern man and tradition Native Americans. Thomas proposes to lend Victor the money he needed after only receiving 100 dollars from the Indian counsel due to lack of funds. That money that Thomas gave Victor was a mark of true friendship. He gave it without expecting anything in return except to be part of the trip to Phoenix. Even thought they have not been friends since they were teenagers, their journey to Arizona helps Victor realize Thomas would later reveal in the story, the reason for him giving Victor the money was that he had given his word to Victor’s father that he would “watch out” for him. Thomas was being a true friend as he had always done such as the incident with the wasp nest when Thomas saved Victor. However, in the end Victor knows that he and Thomas will not be friends after the trip because of how other people perceive Thomas. At the end of the story Victor r54offers half of his father’s ashes to show Thomas that he is grateful for Thomas’…

These two opposing forces are best represented by two of the novel 's principal characters: Victor and Thomas-Builds-the-Fire. Victor, raised in poverty by an alcoholic, "failure" of a father, can only see the past through dark colored glasses. For him, the past is a force that, more often than not, leaves disaster in its wake; the tragedy of the past begets the tragedy of the present, pain begets pain. It is an endless and indefatigable cycle. Thomas-Builds-the-Fire on the other hand, is a man who sees value in the past and in tradition-hence his role as a storyteller. When Thomas speaks of the past in his stories, he speaks of past Indian glory, of acts of bravery and sacrifice, and in such a past he sees hope for the future. For each man, the past holds a different meaning, and a different potential; where one sees only decay, the other sees the possibility for rebirth.…

Victor almost seems to admire Thomas, because Thomas doesn’t care what other people think about him. Although Victor wants to escape from the standards of the white people, he still conforms to their culture because he is afraid of ridicule. However, Thomas doesn’t let other peoples’ opinions affect him, and Victor is jealous of his nonchalant attitude towards other people. “Everyone has dreams about flying. Thomas flew,” (70). Thomas has confidence in himself, which is something that most everyone else in the reservation seems to lack. When Victor sees Thomas’s confidence, he begins avoiding Thomas, perhaps because of jealousy, or possibly because he is afraid of what other people might think about Victor if they see him with Thomas. When Thomas and Victor are returning to Spokane Reservation in “This is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” Thomas says, “I know you aren’t going to treat me any differently than before. Your friends would give me too much shit about it,” (74). Victor is too caught up in the modern world to possibly understand the importance of Thomas’s stories, and Thomas understands Victor’s limitations. However, at the end of “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” Victor agrees to listen to one of Thomas’s stories just once. This symbolizes Victor’s step backwards towards the traditions and stories of Native Americans in the…

The relationship between Victor and Thomas in the movie Smoke Signals is what gives the stories that Sherman Alexie weave they're meaning. As the story goes on so does the relationship from acquaintances, to veritable enemies, to close friends. This shifting in association gives the movie a very heartwarming effect. It showed that these young Indian boys overcame the obstacles that had separated them, and while doing this became close friends. In the opening scene we are exposed to how Thomas' family becomes indebted to Victor's. Victor’s father rescued Thomas from the burning building that killed his parents. We are not made aware of the fact that Victor's father had in fact started the fire as well. Leaving this detail unknown until the end of the movie allows everyone the chance to come to their own conclusions about Victor's father, before his personality is really showed by his neighbor. During the movie, Thomas tried to befriend Victor. The other children consider Thomas a "dork" and Victor did not speak to him very much. The scene after Victor's father left, where Victor beats Thomas into oblivion for making a rude remark about Victor's dad and the scene on the basketball court shows us this feeling of annoyance that Victor holds about Thomas. For unknown reasons, however, Thomas continued to try to befriend Victor. Thomas…

Symbols are everywhere, embodying meanings larger than life. One can find symbolism in music, literature, and even in decoration! They play huge roles in specific themes or emotions in certain situations. In “Masque of the Red Death”, by Edgar Allan Poe, death is personified, terror reigns, and tragedy strikes, as he tells a short tale of the infamous “Black Plague” that reigned over Europe in the middle ages, and how death is absolutely inevitable. In the story, Poe used an intense amount of symbolism within the seven colored chambers to establish the mood of the story, the seven stages of life, and to emphasize the terror of the situation.…
