The Successful State of San Francisco’s Tourism Industry
San Francisco is a city that inspires unconventional ideas and promotes individuality which in turn creates an amazing experience for every type of traveler, resulting primarily in tourism being the major contributing factor to this city’s enormous growth. San Francisco’s diverse tourist appeal is influenced by the city’s picturesque waterfronts, unique hotels, first rate attractions, renowned museums, and unique cultural influences. Therefore, tourists who are solely seeking their own adventures in San Francisco’s breathtaking metropolis are creating a major boost in the city’s tourism industry which is reflected in its economical statistics. Unfortunately, for a city that is on the list of top destinations in the United States, business travelers have created a slight decline in the industry. With the threat of worker strikes looming over the city, meeting planners no longer feel comfortable bringing their conventions to the city, but as San Francisco gains control over labor relations amongst hospitality and transportation industry workers, an important aspect of the city’s tourism industry will parallel its overall success. San Francisco’s tourism industry acts as one of the muscles behind the city’s booming economy. Its frequent portrayal in music, film, and popular culture has made the city and its landmarks recognizable worldwide. This city never fails to live up to its expectations. Diversity is what makes so many fall in love with this city by the bay creating an overwhelming number of tourists that flood San Francisco each year. According to San Francisco Travel, “San Francisco has been named #1 for both best U.S. Vacations and Best Summer Vacations in U.S. News & World Report’s first-ever Best Vacations rankings”(http://travel.usnews/com/). The city also ranked fourth on the “World’s Best Places to Visit” list; eighth on the “Best Family Summer Vacations” list; and nineteenth on the “Best Honeymoon Destinations” list. Recent surveys conducted by the San Francisco Travel Association, reported that “people most like the city’s general ambience, followed by scenic beauty and museums and culture” (Schreiber, 2011.p.2). It is like the old saying: San Francisco is everyone’s city. Exploring San Francisco

According to the author of The Unofficial Guide to San Francisco by Richard Sterling, a “strong mix of culture and cultural identity” remains in San Francisco in spite of the gentrification that swept many of the city’s neighborhoods during the late 1990s (Sterling, 2008, p. 2). San Francisco supports a multicultural population of Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos. Sterling believes that “Europeans love this city because it’s the most European of American cities, and Hispanics gravitate to its Spanish-speaking community (Sterling, 2008, p. 2). San Francisco also has one of the largest Chinese populations in the U.S. The tourism industry in San Francisco can be divided up into five different elements: dining; nightlife and the arts; sports and the outdoors; shopping; and hotels.
