The Struggle between Morals and Ethics
Is it difficult to do the right thing? Is there ever a right time to put ethics ahead of morals or vice versa? Everyone daily must ask themselves these very questions. Morals provide a foundation or belief system to distinguish right from wrong. Religion, family, or life experiences can shape or mold that foundation. Everyone has the ability to distinguish right or wrong in any given situation. Ethics can put morals into action. Ethics is a code of conduct. This code allows us to determine what is right or wrong and put it into practice. Maintaining consistency between ethics and morals is difficult because being ethical is not necessarily being moral.
The differences between ethical issues and moral issues can be vast. According to BusinessDictionary.com, “Ethical issues are problems or situations which requires a person or organization to choose between alternatives that must be evaluated as right (ethical) or wrong (unethical),” (Business Dictionary, 2010). “Moral issues are those which involve a difference of belief and not a matter of preference,” states the P.L.E. website (Philosophy Lander Edu., 2009). Most individuals can make the distinction between right and wrong. Sometimes, people must weigh the pros and cons of a situation and come to an impartial conclusion, ethics. These decisions may not be moral but is the best outcome for the individual or organization.
Personal ethics and business ethics are not always synonymous with each other. Personal ethics are the ethics used in everyday life, compliant with morals. Business ethics are doing what is right or wrong according to the employer or the profit bottom-line of the company. Personal ethics do not necessarily coincide with business ethics.
