The Strength and Weaknesses of Cassie Maddox
After the death of a twelve year old girl, Katy Devlin, detective Cassie Maddox and detective Adam Robert Ryan were in charge to investigate the murder scene. It occurred in the same woods twenty years ago as the unsolved mystery to the death of Rob’s two best friends, Peter and Jamie. In Tana French’s, In the Woods, we were introduced to Cassie as the young, unique individual, with an easy going personality that instantly made her Rob’s best friend. As a detective, she expressed her strength and weaknesses in dangerous and difficult situations throughout the story. When a character with such qualities is introduced, the reader is able to relate and understand her more. After her own experiences, she grows to be strong, talented, and smart which made her one of the few women ever to be on the Murder squad. Despite her attractive qualities, Cassie tried to hide her past which made her character seem weaker. As she got closer to Rob, her affection towards him grew extremely, making it harder for the both of them to solve the case.
One of Cassie Maddox’s best qualities was her strength. She is only twenty-eight years old and got assigned to the murder squad after being stabbed while undercover on the drug squad. “I was secretly terribly impressed, not only by the stabbing, but by the dark, adrenaline-
paced thought of undercover work and by the utter casualness with which she told the story” (15). Having a hard time getting respect from the rest of the squad, she could not talk about the truth so she acted like nothing ever happened. Cassie’s past taught her to always stay in control and never let anything get to her emotionally. I can prove this when Rob said, “Someone told me you were undercover as a hooker and ran into one of the brass, but Cassie just tossed the lighter back to me and grinned” (13). Many women...
