1. Author’s Bias
The article in which I am examining for this portion of the activity is titled Inmate committed suicide in Burnside jail. This article is about a male who was arrested on a parole suspension and remanded on two counts of robbery in Dartmouth. The article doesn’t give us much detail about prison but does go into detail of the male’s history of drug abuse. This article was written with bias as it gives details of the male’s personal life which the society doesn’t necessarily need to know. The article failed to mention any information on the prison and its history. They did say that a suicide hasn’t happened in the prison for 9 years now. However they did not mention how long the prison was open for and if there were any occasions on which suicides did occur in the prison. For this reason I decided to do some research on the prison myself, and found a startling fact. I discovered that the prison had only been open for 9 years, and so this was the prison’s first suicide; which they failed to mention in the article. In the article it also stated the inmate was sent to prison on Friday; however this does not tell us when that was. “Friday” could’ve been last year, but still on a Friday. I felt this was an important detail he failed to mention. This then made me think a little in depth of the situation and I realized the author failed to mention yet another crucial detail. The article never stated whether or not this inmate had any negative relationships or enemies in the prison with other inmates, guards or officers. Could’ve this have been a cover-up?
