I'm going to post some intros from my college essays. Tell me if they grab your attention sufficiently. It is excessively dense, reflective, complex, and reading it gives me one of those migraines that feels not only like my sinus fluid is building up, but like it would feel much better if it were indeed to burst out. Welcome to the world of James Joyce. (UVA) A friend of mine once subtitled her online journal with a caption proclaiming "It's a luscious mix of words and tricks." This statement describes fairly well my sense of humor, which will be my main contribution to the University of Virginia. (UVA) "How do you feel about Wednesdays?" (Chicago)

The narrator of Poe's most famous poem, The Raven, at one point breathes, "The sad uncertain rustling of the purple curtains thrilled me, filled me with a thousand terrors no man ever dared to feel before." (Chicago) When I first saw her, I immediately expected two semesters of misery. (Common) Feeling a powerful urge to waste his $10 on Java Chip Frappuccinos and have nothing to do the next day, he studiously avoided every Starbucks on the way home. He dropped down into his bed, falling asleep immediately after anticipating the next day's events. (Johns Hopkins)

Philosophical questions. Actually, my college essay prompts. (the ones that are interesting, anyway) What work of art/literature/music/mathematics/science has surprised, unsettled, or challenged you, and in what way? What kind of diversity would you bring to (your) campus?
