CHAPTER – I: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
ASSL is the largest shipyard in the private sector in Bangladesh and is the flagship in Ananda Group of nine companies & industries. Ananda Shipyard & Slipways Ltd. [ASSL] emerged as a limited company in 1999. The goodwill, experience, equipment, and manpower of the shipbuilding division of Ananda Builders Ltd, an engineering company established in 1983 were transferred to ASSL since inception. Ananda Shipyard and Slipways Limited (ASSL) were incorporated in 2 June 1999 as a private limited company. It was converted to public limited company on 20 December 2009 by a special resolution. The ASSL has undertaken various projects for the Government and private companies of Bangladesh and for some foreign owners. The objective of the company is primarily to carry out shipbuilding activities. It is a 100% export oriented industrial complex and also active in the field of manufacture of marine equipments and aids to navigation. It has generated the first ongoing ship export from Bangladesh in 2008 to Denmark.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
ASSL has a strong impact in the shipbuilding industry in Bangladesh. It has completely been an export oriented company since its inception. The main concern of the present study is to assess the performance of ASSL, i.e to measure to what extent it has contributed to the shipbuilding industry in Bangladesh and for this ASSL’s Infrastructure at Facilities, Technology, The Quality of its Products and its Projects Reflection been evaluated.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The objective of the company is primarily to carry out shipbuilding activities. It is a 100% export oriented industrial complex and also active in the field of manufacture of marine equipments and aids to navigation. The objectives of this study are as follows: * To have a knowledge about the situation of shipbuilding industry in Bangladesh * To analyze the technology being used of building ships. * To evaluate the recent performance of the company.
* To determine the cost advantages for shipbuilding using through the company’s own infrastructure. * To determine the way of positioning their products among the existing clients. 1.4 Methodology of the Study
The evaluation has been made by assessing in the Infrastructure, Technology, Products and the Projects Reflection of ASSL. The study has been designed in a way that it reflects the details functions and activities of the organization of the firm. Besides the methodologies covered the following:
a) Sources of Data:
In conducting the study data and information have been collected from the diversified sources. Firstly, data have been collected from the published financial statement and prospectus of the company. Each and every year the firm published the financial report. So, this information from the report has been used for the study. Again, many other published materials are here in the collection of ASSL. So, this information has also been used. Meanwhile, there are a lot of published materials, which will also be used for this study purpose. The last but not the least thing is that, assistance from the Internet has also been taken for the study purpose. However, in conducting the study, mainly the assistance from the financial statements, the annual report and the institutional profile of the company have been taken for the study.
b) Quality Control:
In the part of the quality control, throughout the data collection, quality control was the special concern. Whenever, data have been collected, special care was given in this respect so that accurate information can come for the accurate calculation. So, this thing has been done with special care. Again in collecting the data from the financial statement of the firm, various years’ data has been taken for the accurate calculation of the study.
