The Scream Anaylsis
The Scream Edvard Munch created the painting from a particular event in his life. Edvard was walking with two friends during a sunset when suddenly he describes the sky turning blood red. He grabbed hold of a hand rail and began to have a panic attack. He sensed a great, infinite scream pass through his nature. This is where he came up with the idea for the painting “The Scram.”
The painting consists of many wavy, heavy thick lines. The wavy lines convey that the person in the painting Edvard is feeling very nervous and is a sense of worry. This is because he is suffering with a panic attack. The heavy thick lines in the background show that the sky which signifies the panic attack has strength and power and is taking over him. The sky is yellow and red this conveys an emotion which started as a sense of happiness (sunset) into a sense of hell (panic attack). The blue color shows coldness and despair, however Edvard was trying to look out over the rail into the sea when suffering from the panic attack this is because the color blue actually calms you down by slowing down your heartbeat when you are exposed to it. The colors are also very washed out this is to show that Edvard is suffering from illness, he’s very weak and is exposing himself to defeatism. The light in the painting is coming from above Edvard to me this is showing that the painter feels the panic attack is of a spiritual presence of which he has no control over.
The painting has a lot of open space, this illustrates that there is a lack of boundaries to the power of the panic attack. The open space and depth from his friends the painter is experiencing shows that as a result of the panic attack he is becoming distant from the real world. From the formal organization of the painting there seems to be an inverted triangle, with the point of the triangle coming at the body of Edvard. This shows that he is feeling very unstable as a result of the strength of the panic attack.

I believe the bright colors are making a statement to emphasize on the major parts of the artwork. Showing the motion, makes you move your eyes along the imaginary wave. The slight tone of yellow makes me think of the sun come through the wave. The soft light of the off white background makes me think of a light blue sky that is clear of everything. Vague colors made me stare at the picture for long periods of time so that way I could understand why he created this on in particular. I thought maybe like times when he got bored and went to the museum; he created a scene of his bus ride there. Maybe he pictures himself at a beach and what it would be like to sit and watch someone ride a…

The painting consists of a very blue color scheme throughout. This is, in most cases, associated with coldness and sometimes death. The dark blue background also, as mentioned above, provided almost an extreme contrast. In addition to the background, her hair also dark. Had he chosen blonde hair, the contrast would dulled. Most importantly, the girl’s eyeliner very much brings out her eyes. It is strategically placed on her waterlines rather than lids to accentuate her eyeballs and provide incredibly sharp corners to her eyes. The coldness and “deathly” tone of the painting manifests an eerie and dangerous theme. The contrast and accentuation of the girl and her eyes inclines the audience to be intrigued by the girls fearlessness in a cold and deathly…

The color palette of the painting is diverse, while red and warm earth tones dominate the painting. The light source seems to be in front of the left section of the picture while dispersing towards the right. The use of light gives the illusions of volume. The gradation of the sky is very exaggerated. The top is a dark blue and as it reaches the middle the sky is very light. The painting has a smooth finish and is very detailed. The flowers on the bottom are very intricate as well as the patterns of the people’s garments. Each face has a distinguished and unique appearance; no two faces are…

Thomas Cole’s piece titled The Voyage of Life: Youth is part of a four-part series that traces the journey of an archetypal hero along the "River of Life." This piece was made in 1842 and is currently located in The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. The piece is oil on canvas, and it is hanging on the wall with the remaining four stages of human life; childhood, manhood, and old age. Thomas Cole’s oil painting process started with a thin and even application of an additional ground to the already prepared supports in order to harmonize his distinctive color palette. Sometimes he applied the paint quite thinly, but he varied the density of his pigments—they are especially thick in the bright highlights.…

The contrasting patterns between the brushes and the stick like trees could symbolize resistance in this dispute between good and evil, along with the chaos that comes with discord. Overall, this painting has so many pieces and once they are put together, there is suddenly a clash of colors, patterns, textures and even light which most likely means some sort of battle or dispute is taking…

Looking at the painting for the first time will give us many different views and opinions towards it. To some of us the man's face might seem as he must be enjoying some kind of rock music or doing a head bang (because that was my first opinion towards the painting). But later as we focus and try going deep into the painting the use of the colors will help explaining more about it. The colors seems to bursting out everywhere. There is a use of many different colors such as blue, white, maroon, and brown. The blue color here signifies the emotion. It helps explaining the emotion such as fear, anxiety, and sadness. This color can also be considered as a medium representing water and along with this, the white color can be consider as the water bubbles blowing. So, the use of blue and white color makes the man look as if he is drowning. He might be drowning in some kind of emotion. Now, the other color such as brown, maroon helps finding out what kind of emotion the artist is trying to show. The color brown and maroon being a dull color we can interpret that the artist is trying to show some kind of dull emotion. So, we can say that the man is overwhelmed with sadness. He is drowned in emotion such fear, anxiety, and…

This seems to the main focal point as the suns rays illuminate it and is essentially in the foreground of the painting. The background of this painting seems to be gloomy and fading in the distance, which gives of a sort of atmospheric perspective. The radiated waves filled with outstanding colors of white, turquoise and greens are brought to life by showing motion through their shapes. It really grasps the eyes of the beholder because the white color on the waves appear like lightening, adding to the story in this painting of two men battling the storm all around them. This painting also really catches your attention on how Wiley created such a bright luminous area in the foreground of the painting and bordered the painting in a dark, gloomy, muddy aura.…

In the upper left hand corner of the painting it has darker hues, warm temperatures with contour lines, and it causes a feeling of darkness. The dark colors that were used in the trees, grass and sky were helpful in setting the mood of the painting, they help to convey what Hirschl wants to say. Hirschl was also triumphant in his use of symbolism to show the destructiveness of nature and the helplessness of man. The use of the water hitting the rocks with great force as well as the windy atmosphere along with the cemetery, showed that man could never control nature. His elements worked very well together, on first look of the painting we see the gravestones and immediately feel gloomy which is what Hirschl wants. Another thing that can be felt at a glance of this painting is helplessness, we feel as though we cannot do anything with such gusty winds and powerful waves.…

Throughout the painting one can see darkness and sadness. It appears to be raining. When it rains, it sometimes makes people sad. It also makes things really dark, not just the sky, but also people’s feeling. When it rains some people become very depressed somewhat like the painting. Which is very dark and gloomy. The painting is also very dark because the only colors in the painting are the filler colors of the umbrellas. The colors used in the…

The variation of colors he used created an outstanding display of nature that I never thought possible. I believe his purpose was to create imagery, an illusion to the audience, as if they were looking into the American West, through his painting. The entity of light was the key element of this painting. The form of a fine white line amid a mass of water allowed the separation of the earth and the heavens. What is intriguing about the painting is that as quickly as the earth and heaves were separated, the two joined once again at the same location. The reflection of the lake elaborated on the purity of the water and the richness of life. The contrast of dark and light colors served a great importance in his painting.…

I believe this painting shows a loss of identity. This is the reason I chose this as my favorite piece of art, because I can relate to it. There came a time in my life where I was struggling with my own identity. In today's world it is very significant to identify oneself with at least one thing (ones ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, or a particular belief). Many people still grapple with the notion of identity in many countries, regions, and various ways in order to fit or adapt into any environment (social, economic, cultural, political, etc). One’s identity determines ones position or situation in society wherever one lives. However, finding the right type of…
