Canada’s multiculturalism, democratic system of government and healthcare system are my top three choices that make me proud to be Canadian. From all the countries in the west, Canada is the only country to rank in the top 20 most diverse and multicultural countries (Morin). Not to mention, Toronto which is a city located in Canada is the most ethnically diverse and multicultural city in the entire planet (Rouse). I am proud to have multiculturalism in Canada since it promotes diversity and demonstrates how people from all cultures can live together in peace and harmony. Multiculturalism is a marvelous way to meet new people and discover various traditions and cultures. Additionally, it brings new foods to savor, interesting cultural activities…

Throughout my practicum, I have realized the importance of being aware of the clients and their backgrounds. I didn’t realize that there was a client in one of the group sessions that was homosexual. When my comment in the group was taken to mean a husband and wife relationship, I didn’t know his background or situation. The other therapist commented and asked how he felt about the topic and if he was uncomfortable. He mentioned that he was ok with it, he felt he could apply what they were saying to any other kind of relationship. He also said that he had come to terms to the fact that he would probably never get married. This just made me realize that I was no longer just with heterosexual LDS men and later I would…

    Black Youth Citizenship

The focus of Dr. Jagers’ study was Black youths and civic development. The purpose of the study was to promote the growth of Black youths because their group is at a greater risk of “under-realized potential, problem behaviors and constrained long-term life chances” all because of the “social, political and economic inequities” in the contexts of domestic and international (Jagers, 2017). So, due to the oppression and challenges Black youths faced, the study recruited youths to participate in activities, such as participating in community services or summer programs, in order to promote the youths’ civic development while also exemplifying their active citizenship. So, the results of the study demonstrated a positive relationship between learning…

Stereotypes are all around us and they occur on a regular basis. They exist in our workplace, at home and in schools. Stereotypes have a “powerful influence on children’s perceptions of reality” (York, 2006, pg. 151). As educators it is essential that we encourage an anti-bias classroom environment by implementing material in the classroom that reflects multiculturalism and diversity. According to Stacey York, “many commercial teaching materials are outright stereotypical” (York, 2006, pg. 152). In the classroom, there are many things that teachers can do in order to help eliminate stereotypes in the classroom.…

A community issue that is important to me, is a lack of youth minority role models. This is an issue to me because minorities need someone to look up to and someone to lead them. Especially in the African American community when fatherly or a typically male played role is not always there. Not having a role model can easily affect a child and their aspirations. That is why I think there should be more minority role models, so other minorities students will have one another to support and one another to look up to. To fix this community issue, minority students would have to do is hold one another accountable and expect one another to do all that they can to succeed. Roles models can shape a person, regardless of the sex, religion, class etc. Though a role model that looks like you can touch you even closer than someone may not.…

I grew up in the deep south were racism was still alive and thriving. My time was in the sixties when the Klux Klux Klan was causing trouble and nothing was being done about it. My parents would tell my sisters and me to always be home before the sun went down because they were afraid that we might be taken or worst killed. When I attended school schools were segregated, but all the students in my class were people of color. White students had their class and we had ours all at the same school.…

The difference between values and morals are not always clear. Certain values are universal, but this does not mean that they are absolute. For example, killing may be permitted in certain circumstances to execute a criminal, in war, or to preserve one’s life. But in each case, it is recognized as an exception to be justified in terms of value taking precedence. The ethical dilemma raises the question whether or not the therapist can keep their values out of their counseling session. This chapter suggests there are reasons why it might be inappropriate for a counselor to impose a system of values or philosophy on the client.…

Being an ethnic minority and the contextual factors that come with it contribute to anxiety disorders among youth. All the disadvantages that come with being a minority interact in a way that produces a stressful environment, furthering feelings of anxiety. The most commonly associated variable with minority status is low socioeconomic status. Both of these factors are related to symptoms of anxiety. From a socio-ecological perspective racial minority status is part of the exosystem, which forms the setting in which a young person lives in. Socioeconomic status belongs to the macrosystem in its relations to social class and the economic system. The connection between minority youth and low SES creates implications such as poverty which can…

The event that I decided to attend was the Multicultural Student Union meeting on Wednesday April 12th. At the beginning of the event we played an introductory game. Then the leaders told us what we would be doing and the different things we would be hearing about. They then showed everyone a video for the Relay for Life event and then they had a speaker come in who asked questions about how cancer has affected the lives of everyone around them. After that speaker left we got into groups and talked about the upcoming event and how we felt about what people said. We then all played a large game of sharks and minnows and ended the night talking about events that the MSU team will be holding such as the POW WOW and the need…

When I was little I waited for that moment my mom would take me to her country for the first time. I was eight years old the first time I got to go to El Salvador. My first week there was spent outside playing with the other girls and boys. One of the girls, perhaps 2 years older than I, invited me to her house. I walked in and before she could go out and play she had to do chores just like any other kid my age. I stood there bewildered on how much she already knew how to do.…
