WEEK 1: THE ROLE OF SOCIAL NETWORKS IN INFORMATION DISSEMINATION. Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. In this presentation, three of the most popular social networks will be treated with regards to the roles they play in information dissemination. They include Facebook which is noted for pictures, Youtube popular for videos and Twitter which specializes in short messages known as tweets.
Facebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004, owned and operated by Facebook, Inc. As of September 2012, Facebook has over one billion active users, more than half of them using Facebook on a mobile device. Users must register before using the site, after which they may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common-interest user groups. With Facebook, one can load pictures of events such as wedding, birthday parties and graduation. With this family members and friends who missed the event can have a feel of those wonderful moments. One can share his thought and his friends can pass comments and this normally turns into discussions and debates. There are also media houses that publish news and stories on their Facebook page. These pages are updated from time to time. Popular people all over world including presidents, musicians and footballers have Facebook pages and authentic information about them is posted. Companies also market their products through the free advertorial spaces. Youtube.
YouTube is a video-sharing website, created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005, on which users can upload, view and share videos. Registered users can upload an unlimited number of videos. Videos considered to contain potentially offensive...
