The Role of Plastic Surgery

Many people obtain plastic surgery because of media pressure, physical deformities and to boost their self esteem.   Every media outlet from magazines, billboards, and television reaches society and expresses the ideals of what beauty is.   This is one of the reasons why every year, 400,000 Americans go to plastic surgeon and this even includes 48,000 men.   In the article “The Biology of Beauty” Nancy Etcoff, a neuroscientist who studies human attraction states, “Every culture is a ‘beauty culture’” (1996).

      Sometimes plastic surgery is necessary because physical deformities have been caused by a violent act, disease, or just born with it.   Physical deformities have been treated as phenomenon or freak circus side shows.   One popular show and place is Ripley’s Believe or Not Museums.   Some people found refuge in the circus or shows like Ripley’s because it was a way to get accepted. This is when plastic surgery has been the second option and helped them come out of hiding and see what the world has to offer.   For instance burned victims get new skin and people that have been attacked with horrible wounds get a new start.   Also according to the author Ken Siman in his book”The Beauty Trip” “In a society where everything is supposed to be within reach, this is painful to face.” “From acne to birth defects, we wear our imperfections as thorns, for we know the world sees them and take notes” (2004).

      Society believes if they change their outer appearance their self esteem and confidence will increase.   This is why there is a high trend in plastic surgery. Reports by the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) states a 48 percent jump over the previous year.   This increase is due to the popularity to television shows like “Extreme Makeover” and “The Swan” which is targeted for any age group.   It gives them a sense of hope and believes that it could be them (2004).According to Scott Spear, president of ASPS...
