ABSTRACT

Library resources including textbooks, serials, fictions and digital or electronic resources usually provide vast amount of information which will suffice and encourage effective and efficient teaching in various institutions in Nigeria. Absence of these resources may lead to poor training and poor background of our students since from secondary schools. Therefore, this paper examines “The Roles of Library Resources in Effective Handling of Senior Secondary Schools Education in Nigeria”. Types of library resources to be selected in Senior Secondary Schools, the role of library resources in effective handling of Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria, and finally the researcher made recommendations that Government should provide the library resources that will support and enable the educational system in Senior Secondary Schools in Nigeria. INTRODUCTION
It is the responsibility of Government to provide the best possible educational opportunities within its remit for all students. Open access policies, together with statutory requirements, mean that librarian need to take in to account the requirements of libraries with special needs when building library collections. Wilkins (1975:31) noted that secondary education is designed to give selected pupils learning experience in a wide range of literary, scientific, humanistic and creative studies, develop interests that might lead to a choice of career, and provide opportunities for physical activities and social services appropriate to young adults.

In view of this, establishment of library in senior secondary schools in Nigeria is highly essential, because the library has become an important part of the institution of learning, the educational process rely on library as a resource for intellectual development of students and staff. It also provides the resources or materials, which support the classroom instructions and curriculum of institution. In addition, such resources or materials must provide information for a variety of students’ interest and needs.

Today, library resources services as a second teacher to students, they develop skills and give quality learning. These resources include: Books, Newspapers, Bulletin, Maps, Journals, Internet, CDs, DVD, Computers, slides, radio cassettes etc. The library resources therefore, can be defined as all informational documents stored in a library for the use of patrons. These resources record and store human knowledge. The library resources can be acquired through: - Purchase

- Gift
- Donation/Endowment
- Interlibrary Loan
- Legal Deposit Law.
LIBRARY RESOURCES
According to Dike (1985), Library resources
contains a varied and enjoyable collection of reading resources-Picture books, stories, novels, magazines, topic books, etc. which can help children learn to associate reading with pleasure.

The library resources are intellectual collections of different ideas of different authors stored in the library for the benefit of users e.g. textbooks, serials, maps, dictionaries, year books.
