The Prohibition of Marriage among the People with the Same Surnames is an important marriage system to the Wa nationality in that the Wa people believe that people who have the same surnames are relatives. So marriages and sexual intercourses are strictly forbidden among these people, or they are regarded as committing incest and will be punished by beating and by confiscating family properties. However, marriages among the people with the same surnames still remain in the Wa society. In Cangyuan, Yunnan there is a village called Bannai where people grow crops as their main incomes. There are 1251 people there and it is mainly consisting of people whose surnames are Zhao, Tian, Li, Chen, Xiao and others are less practically which had engendered the limitation for the Wa youth to choose their lovers. As the development of the Wa society, love between the Wa youth in Bannai is relatively free, but the marriage system is extremely rigorous. They are restrained by a “law” which is neither a policy from government nor a stipulation of authority. It is a local law made by the Wa nationality through the long-time civilized process. Observing the “law” is regarded as a moral excellence, in the contrary, people who transgress and destroy it should be punished. The “law” is effective to everybody in the village. No matter it accords with science or not, the importance is that the “law” had solved problems, preserved order and achieved the goal of unity. Marriages among the people with the same surnames are forbidden, people there deem that this behavior will make the village dirty and course a series of disasters.
