The Reality of the American Dream
The term “The American Dream”, was originated from historian James Truslow Adams, in which who believed “that life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his or her ability or achievement” (Adams 2). What Adams is saying is that everyone has the opportunity to succeed. No matter what ethnicity, culture or religion one identifies with, each person is capable of his or her own success. In today’s society, however, the definition of “The American Dream” varies depending on the person ethnicity, cultural, and religion status. Many people interpret the “American Dream” as a person, who is married with 2.5 kids, has a successful career, a dog, and a house surrounded by a white picket fence; however, the American Dream is more than that. Then some may even ask what is “The American Dream”? Or does the American Dream still exists? Also, some may even feel as though the American dream no longer exists. Despite these different views of what the “American Dream”, is today many individuals come to the United States of America in search of their American Dream. One may strive for freedom to create a better life for his or herself through hard work and fair ambition, equality, and the opportunity to achieve their personal goals by becoming educated. Based on this freedom a person is able to control one’s own destiny through obtaining a college education and landing a successful career. Nonetheless, the existence of the “American Dream” depends on how hard one is willing to work towards their ultimate goal to achieve the “American Dream”. Freedom has to be one of the most important dreams for Americans because freedom did not come easy; it must be fought for through hard work and ambition. Although, the “American Dream” is the pursuit of freedom, opportunity and accomplishment of one’s needs and wants. As Martin Luther King Stated, “we will reach the goal of freedom in Birmingham and all over the nation, because the goal of America is Freedom” (205). This quote explains how not only the people in Birmingham but also the people all over the United States will one day have the right to fulfill the “American Dream” by being free if they are willing to work for it. Some may even feel that freedom is the most essential aspect of the “American Dream” because it allows people to execute their view of the “American Dream”. As well as being able to serve a purpose by becoming an active member of the current day society and through chasing their hopes and dreams. The ability of having freedom has made the United States into a cultural mixture it is today by not limiting people to a single opportunity. According to abc news as King stated in his I have a Dream Speech, “My country, ‘tis of thee/sweet land of liberty, of the I sing; / land where my father’s died/ land of the pilgrims’ pride/ from every mountainside let freedom ring! (1)”Meaning that Americans will one day be able to withhold its true meaning of unity and that everyone will one day be free across the united nation The capability of being free and having freedom still brings many immigrants to the country who believes in the “America Dream. For example, if an immigrant was to come to the United States as an underprivileged or deprived individual then they will still be able to have the opportunity to turn that around through hard work and determination, and the belief in freedom of the “American Dream”. However, many Americans and immigrants may feel as though freedom has more than one meaning. For Instance, Freedom can be the allowance to express ones thought, having equal rights, or even having the aspirations and desires to do as one pleases. Nevertheless, of course freedom comes with responsibility. So once people obtain their freedom how will they use their newly found freedom? Regardless of, any obstacle that may come in anyone way to...
