the theory mentions that the mental apparatus can be divided into conscious, unconscious, and Pre-Conscious. Then the Topographic theory was then replaced with the structure theory, this theory states the mental state consists of the id, ego, and super ego. The id exists at the beginning of birth which is the basic natural instincts. The ego develops as someone ages consisting between urges and the external world, and is based on the “reality principle”. The super-ego is related with ego and has to do with self-observation and self-criticism. In today’s society psychoanalysis is not really popular, but still has a significant influence on public thinking because of its popularity in the 20th century. Erik Erikson a theorist that expanded on Freud’s idea relating to psychoanalysis. Eriskson stressed on growth throughout the lifespan. Erikson created a theory called Psychosocial development it is one of the best know theories of personality in psychology. A lot like Sigmund Freud, Eriksond thought that personality develops in a series of stages. Unlike Freud’s theory of psychosexual stages, Erikson’s theory describes the effect of social experience throughout the whole lifespan. Psychosocial stage 1 is Trust Vs. Mistrust- In this stage a child successfully develops trust, he or she will feel safe and secure in the world. Caregivers who are inconsistent, emotionally unavailable, or rejecting contribute to feelings of mistrust in the children they care for. Failure to develop trust will result in fear and a belief that the world is inconsistent and unpredictable. Stage 2 is Autonomy Vs. Shame and doubt- In this stage Children gain control of food choices, clothing, and toys. Children who successfully complete this stage feel secure and confident, while those who do not are left with a sense of inadequacy and self-doubt. Stage 3 Initiative Vs.
