During the 78th Philippine Public Health Association Annual Convention on July 22, 2010 at the Grand Opera Hotel, Rizal Avenue corner Doroteo Jose, Sta. Cruz Manila, the Provincial Health Board, or the Davao del Sur Local Health Governance, was awarded the title of Best Performing Local Health Board by the Philippine Public Health Association (PPHA), and the Department of Health, (DOH). Because they came out on top of numerous health boards throughout the country, the PHB was awarded 126 million pesos that serves as health funds. The amount was to be spent as follows: 60M for additional buildings in Davao del Sur hospitals, 20M for the equipment needed in these new facilities, and 46M to be distributed to district hospitals namely Sarangani, Jose Abad Santos, Don Mercilino, Malita, and Kiblawan. Atty. Alexis C. Albao, MD, MHA, CSEE, president of the PPHA, presented this award to Gov. Douglas RA. Cagas, the PHO Chairperson, and Dra. Azucena M. Dayanghirang, MD, MCH, the Provincial Health Officer, with the theme “Towards the Unification of Health Workers” at the said venue and date. Dr. Anthony T. Araneta, the DOH representative, was also present in this occasion. Being awarded this title at a very important event, people would wonder why this organization-above every other equally prestigious institute- was chosen to receive this great honor. The PHB obtained the said award because of the delivery of its services according to Ma’am Liza Orevillo. They are the ones who recommend the proper budgets and perform annual check-ups on the said budgets, and advise Governor Douglas Cagas in terms of health related issues. This is also the only health related organization that has a night shift in the entire vicinity of Davao del Sur. Gov. Cagas said that the PHB is the pride of Davao del Sur.
