The Prince and the Pauper
“The difference between our decadence and the Russians' is that while theirs is brutal, ours is apathetic”. In this quote from James Thurber it appears there may have a lot of meanings but it seems to me that it is relating to society and the treatment of people wealth and poverty. This quote is the bases and theme for the book The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain. Twain uses his characters to show a strong statement that society treats one another poorly based on riches and poverty! Right out of the book twain starts off by going into great detail of the young prince, Edward, whom is wealthy and set for life, and another boy who is a lot less fortunate, Tom Canty who, is in a way, has the opposite life style of Edward. Tom has to beg for food every day for him and his family to get by in life with starving; sometimes they go days without eating because there isn’t enough food for the five people in his household. On top of that his father and grand mom beat him, for no apparent reason. These two live very different lives, one is the heir to the throne, and one is just fantasizing of a better life someday. They are treated differently in society because of their parent’s wealth, and social rank. These two switch lives and Tom is babied because he has taking the role of king, and Edward, well this quote should say it all, “For Edward the experience has been especially powerful, and his reign is marked by efforts to relieve the oppression of society underclass (Fischer, “The Prince and the Pauper by Samuel L. Clemens). “It appears also to be over weighted with purpose” (Mark twain’s Critical Receptions by Gribben, Alan) and that’s what you’re going to find out in this paper, piece by piece. In Mark Twain’s novel “The Prince and the Pauper” the guard says, “Mind your manner beggar” (Twain p. 39).
