“The Power of a Glance”
I agree with Victor Hugo’s statement in the book Les Meserables; on actual power in a glance. There can be a lot of power in a glance or even just a friendly smile. I also think that could be referring to flirtatious actions. Everyone has been guilty of a lingering glance toward the opposite sex in hopes of returned friendliness. Flirting is defined as behaving in a playful or alluring way. When you want the attention of someone the first thing you do is look at them. Marius craved that attention from Cosette, and to try and get that from her and so he pretty much stalked her and was determined to receive that same fondness. However I do not believe in the idea of love at first sight. I don’t think that there is enough power in one glance for two people to fall madly, head over heals in love. I do not think it is actual love. Love takes time and effort it takes learning about someone and also learning to love their faults. Marius didn’t even know Cosette’s faults. I don’t think a person can see someone and honestly think they are in love they don’t know anything about that person such as their personality, what their hobbies are, what they like or don’t like, or their temperament. For all they know that person could be another Ted Bundy, a killing psycho freak on loose that is looking for their next victim.
I do however believe in lust at first sight or that a person can be infatuated and have chemistry for someone else just by looking at them. A person can be physically attracted to someone else that is the first step. Its not love, love comes later in my opinion. Someone might be so infatuated with someone or so obsessed that they might be blind to the fact that in all actuality they are not in love with a person they’ve only seen and no nothing about. For some the feeling of infatuation may be so strong for someone that they confuse it for love. You don’t approach someone thinking I love everything...
