The Power of Language
Language is a powerful tool of communication. In fact, it is a vital and nessercary tool in communication. Language however can be misinterpreted and can mean more than one thing. In “Sarah Cole” and “Jealous Husband returns in the form of a Parrott” the communication is weak between the characters and their lovers. This therefore destroys their relationships all together. The people in the stories are left to wonder why they failed to be in a relationship.
The story of “Sarah Cole” shows the irony of how you don’t know what you have until it’s gone. Ron the main character falls in love with Sarah Cole without knowing it and once Sarah Cole dies. Ron can no longer speak with her. So he can't communicate with her which destroys him inside, that he messed up with the person he loves. “I learned that I truly did love her and now I have begun to grieve over her death, to wish her alive again, so that I can say to her the things I could not know or say when she was alive, when I did not know that I loved her”(Banks 16). Ron describes how he now realizes that he ruined his relationship with Sarah Cole and he now realizes that she is gone and that he realizes how much he meant to her and it hurts him to think about how he treated her. Ron is now remorseful and can't talk to her because she is dead. So not being able to communicate with Sarah Cole is destroying Ron as a person. When it was Ron’s abuse language that made Sarah Cole leave him.
The reason Sarah Cole left Ron was because of Ron’s selfishness and also he felt he controlled her because he was the better looking person in the relationship because she was so ugly. So he just used her for the sex and did not have an emotional connection with her. Then when she tried to talk to Ron about their relationship, Ron went off on her and told her “Leave me you disgusting ugly bitch” (18).
