INTRODUCTION
              CHAPTER I

“What is more real? The man in his dreams or the man asleep in his bed?”(Unamuno)

    I have always felt that my dreams that I had while asleep had a definite and direct impact on my waking hours.   If I woke up sad, I knew that the cause could be traced back to a dream I had the night before.   I remember being approached at work by a colleague who asked : “What’s wrong, why are you so upset? Did something happen?” I replied, it was my dream last night.   I also would have mornings that upon awakening, I’d feel elated.   I then too could trace the felicity back to a dream I had right before waking up.
    Not realizing at the time just how important my dreams were to my well-being, I used to think that sleep was just a waste of my time.   For me in particular, a good nine hours are needed for my body to feel refreshed the next day, and so perhaps more than one third of my life would be wasted due to sleep.   Only through the study of my dreams and the study of Metaphysics did I come to appreciate that the one third of my life sleeping really is no waste of time at all, but is in fact a great aid to my conscious being and my wholeness as a person.   I have always been a great lover of philosophy and truth.   Metaphysics has taught me to love my dream world too.   Each night I look forward to my dreams and even my nightmares! I know that they hold the key to many of the hidden secrets I wish to discover about myself, my purpose, and my place in the universe.   Even if a dream can give me only a tidbit of information about this person I call “me”, the dream was well worth the time.   Every night I close my iron lids in the faith that I will wake up with a better knowledge of who I am.
    Many philosophers have the creed that we are here with the ultimate purpose to “know thyself”.   To know myself is a great challenge, but a challenge that cannot be shirked if one is to grow in wisdom.
