The Port of Yokohama is geographically located in the Tokyo Bay area which is one of the major bays in Japan. The port is within the city of Yokohama and are neighboured by Port of Kawasaki and Port of Yokosuka. It is managed by the Yokohama Port Authorities and major operations are dealt with by the Yokohama Port Development Public Corporation. It is renowned as one of the leading international trade ports in Japan and supports not only the population in Yokohama, which is around 3.5 million, but also the citizens in the Kanto area. The major import product is crude oil from countries such as Saudi Arabia and the highest imports country wise are from China, which includes products such as food and clothing. On the other hand, the Port of Yokohama exports cars the most using the high-tech Roll-on Roll-off vessels, and the highest exports country wise are to again China, with products such as machinery. On top of that, the port has developed into one of the major areas in Yokohama, that is to say recreational as well as industrial. In Japan there are 3 main different types of ports, namely, “Specifically Designated Major Ports”, “Major Ports” and “Regional Scale Ports”. Port of Yokohama is one of the largest and most important ports in Japan and is assigned as one of the 23 “Specifically Designated Major Ports”. In July 2005, these 23 ports were further narrowed down to the so called “Appointed Specially Designated Major Ports”. This privilege was announced in order for those ports to receive additional benefits to promote international trade with container piers. The main advantage was to be able to get a loan without interest when investing in a “Specifically Designated International Container Pier”. This container pier is constructed by combining the current traditional container piers into a larger scale one that can unite operations and improve efficiency.
