The Phone Call
Less than half an hour into the New Year and my only remaining party buddy was the toilet, second cubicle on the left. Happy bloody New Year I thought, just as I threw up for the fourth time already that night.

I was thinking about everything that happened last year and I thought about when my sister got married. I personally hated her fiancé; well actually I've always loathed that word fiancé. It makes me think of size eight posh spice look-alikes and huge diamond rings worth more than a small country. Courtney planned everything; she made me go over her hair do plans for me, my mother and the twenty-six bridesmaids! I remember in the car on the way home she planned the eight-layer cake and a full lilac colour scheme. The word boring came to mind when I started to drift into la la land. By the time I came back to the real world, Courtney had worked out all the hymns, seating arrangements and decided that she wanted pink sweets to be handed round for the guests to choke on. My sisters wedding had taken over eighteen months to plan, which made me think of what my wedding would be like or if I would remain permanently single.

I was trying to think back to how I ended up like I am now. I think it must have been the two bottles of wine, champagne, beer and three vodka cocktails. I had my cheek pressed firmly against the cold rim of a wet toilet and sometime later I had ended up falling off my stool at a nearby bar and getting a cherry stuck up my nose. This was hardly the New Year celebration I had planned; I mean I didn't even have a date.

As I started to walk home everywhere I looked the people were in pairs even the old people too stupid to know who they are. Not looking where I was going, I walked straight into a signpost and collapsed onto the front of some flashy car.

The next morning I woke up on the floor of my kitchen surrounded by half eaten chocolate bars and a fag still burning next to my head. I decided that a shopping trip would be the

A congregant Allison Woods narrated her New Year eve experience to CNN: "It didn't seem real because it was like the scripture that our pastor was reading, it was like it came off the page. It's the next day, when you think of all that could have happened, what could have gone wrong, it sinks in how terrible it could have gone wrong."…

My wrists started to ache terribly as I trudged along the hard concrete road. Usually, when I took this route home, I passed all sorts of strange looking people. Where we lived, was an odd place, the people there were very friendly, but sometimes too friendly, getting in the way of your private life, asking personal questions that you didn’t really know how to answer.…

On the day of our wedding, everything was overwhelming. My excitement filled me in because after a very long time of courtship I have finally earned her yes. Right at that very moment I could already imagine what our future would be, a very happy couple playing with our children in our beautiful mansion. We would be perfect. And to start it off, our wedding should be perfect too, and nothing would ever ruin it, nothing. So, I hired the best organizer to put up everything into place. I invited my business partners, my friends and my family. And lastly, I had given the beautiful and precious lace to my beautiful bride moments before our wedding ceremony started. I could already feel my heart pumping so fast but then sudden ideas…

I went to my room and packed all of my belongings into two massive suitcases and loaded them into my old Holden Astra. I took some money from my mother's stash, neatly tucked away, out of sight under the bottom drawer of her bedside table, and then left for the next town over. I found a cheap motel where I stayed a few weeks, trying to find someone that would hire a 17 year old girl that dropped out of year 11. I got a job working at some fast food place that I hadn’t heard of before, and I still can’t remember what it was called.…

Alone. Penniless. Destitute. That was it. All my money gone! I had nothing left. I was heading towards Leeds but as I stopped for the lights I saw a hitchhiker, I looked deep into his eyes and he looked back at me in the same way. He was around the same age as me: his hair cascading like a waterfall to his shoulders, his leather jacket tattered and a rustic looking backpack. I don’t know why, but I told him to get into the car. It was like my mind said, “Carry on” but my heart said, “Stop”.…

New Year's eve was the first time meeting my Hispanic boyfriend's family, of course I had taken a few Spanish classes back in high school, but not even the most advanced class could have saved me here. As the night grew longer, the room began to flood with people. The live mariachi band was over the top and rambunctious;they were the life of the party, but I felt as if my ear drums were about to burst. Everyone was up and about dancing, chatting, eating and visiting with one another. It seemed like everywhere I looked I saw family and friends hugging and exchanging handshakes throughout the night! The room was filled with love and joy, everyone reminiscing over the years and catching up on lost times.…

A week passed by in no time and I felt worn out. For the past seven days, my mornings and afternoons were consumed with Johaly and wedding stuff. I was sick and tired of talking about flowers, dresses, jewelry, makeup, and hairstyles. I didn’t dare tell Johaly that because I told her that I was going to be here for her. If that wasn’t bad enough, my nights and early mornings were filled with flashing lights, strippers, alcohol, and clubbing with Shay. Her schedule was jammed packed with deejaying gigs, and she was raking in the dough. She’d made over seven thousand dollars, and that wasn’t including all the free drinks and tips she’d received.…

I felt myself blushing and felt my heart rate going so fast it was scary. I also felt a bit shy knowing that everyone was looking at me. The preparations for this coming out party are elaborate traditions of dancing, food, tiaras, dresses, favors. Some of the traditions are sweet goodbyes to the little girl…a last doll a dance with daddy. And some celebrate the young women that the child has become. Made-up with elegant make up as it’s traditionally the first time I can wear make and also to wax my eyebrows.…
