In the presented essay I will try to provide you a clearer idear of the Peter Principal and promotion to the level of incompatance. The will be done by giving a little segment of someone's experience with the Peter Principal just to demonstrate the negative result the Peter Principal can have on people and businesses. This paper will also provide more examples of the Peter Principal, the result or the effect that this Peter Principal has on people and the companies, and the pros and cons. This essay will also go into the terms competence and incompetence, what do these really mean and how competent or incompetent are people when they get promoted.Finally this essay will also show HR strategies, what role does does HR play in poor promotion decisions. (Cox & Beale, 1997; Charles Sturt HRM502 2011 version 1.)
So what is competence? In a discussion that occurred in the 1980s in the England, competence was basically explained as ‘the ability to do a particular activity to a prescribed standard (Working Group on Vocational Qualifications 1986). UDACE said that ‘competence is concerned with what people can do rather than what they know. I completely agree with this statement, the biggest problem in companies was that even though the company grew over the years from a small community based organisation to a now maybe a multimillion dollar operation. They would not hire new people to take the managers roles, this would be done by long term staff. The Peter Principal applies here as the organisation has outgrown in size and complexity beyond the intellectual, emotional and technical capacity and skills of the long term staff. So they would simple not be competent for there role any more.
