The Ornament

Christmas has always been a special holiday for the Smith family. It was was a day filled with gifts and desserts for the whole family. The father, Bruce, would spend hours decorating the outside of the house while the mother, Sherry, would shop for presents for everyone. But, the most decorative and expensive holiday item was their Christmas tree. Bruce, Sherry, and their daughter, Emily, would spend the whole day after Thanksgiving decorating this tree. The tree was always over sized with over sized decorations. It could barely fit in the living room. This tree was the centerpiece of all decorations. It was the symbol of Christmas for the Smith family. Family members and friends would visit from all over the state just to get a glimpse of this beautiful tree. It was only decorated with the shiniest, most expensive ornaments anyone could find.
I had a lot of pressure to be a Christmas tree ornament for the Smith family. I’ve been an ornament for this family for generations. But, I’ve never seen a generation be so passionate about a tree before. So, I always tried my best to be the shiniest and most glamorous decoration there was. I am the classic star ornament. From every angle I sparkle. From every side I shine. I was a Smith family favorite. I always felt like I belonged when they hung me on a branch. I felt flawless.
One Christmas Eve, Bruce and Sherry’s toddler daughter, Emily, was crawling by the tree. I kept feeling myself slide down the branch. So, I looked down to discover Emily shaking all the pines and branches. I felt myself sliding forward more every second until I completely fell forward. I landed straight onto the floor and shattered. The last thing I heard was Emily’s cry.
I was stuck in the attic like every other non presentable ornament. After the accident, Bruce tried several times to glue me back together. But, I never looked like I use to, I still had cracks and imperfections. It was like a scar that would never fade or a bruise that would never heal. Little did I know that I would be stuck in this dusty box for over two decades.
One morning, twenty years later, Emily was cleaning out the attic when she discovered my box. When she picked me up, I was so excited that I couldn’t contain my happiness. I felt her fingers slide over my imperfections and I remembered why I was put in that box the first place. She carried me with her when she went to ask Sherry why I wasn’t hung on the tree this year. Sherry explained the accident that happened years ago and that since then I was useless. But, she also explained how I’ve been a family ornament for generations. Sherry said I was the very first ornament anyone in the Smith family ever owned. Since then, I’ve been apart of the Smith’s family Christmas tree. I was almost like a tradition for this family. Emily realized that the sentimental value out weighted my imperfections. It’s not how the ornament looks but the meaning behind it that matters. I represent family and when you think about it, that is the true meaning behind Christmas.

Christmas is a holiday celebrated around the world. Children wait all night the evening before for santa to place their gifts beneath the tree. Excitement rages from them the morning of December twenty-fifth; pretty wrapping paper and shiny bows glisten under the christmas tree lights while the bulbs upon it sparkle so elegantly. However, Christmas is not about all these aspects that it is displayed as. Christmas has more meaning than pretty gifts and how many gifts each child has under the tree. This holiday is above the amount of money one kid gets while the next gets so little. Though some see Christmas as a materialistic holiday, it has far more depth than so little meaning. The Holiday of Christmas contrasts greatly with celebrations…

    Christmas vs Thanksgiving

Christmas is a kid’s favorite holidays for really only one reason: presents. We live in a society where materialistic things outweigh almost anything else. We would do almost anything to get the new iPhone, and we have an annual “buy as much as you can” day, also known as Black Friday. Christmas, unfortunately, has gone away from its religious origins and has been turned into the most expensive holiday of the year. Although I am sitting here trashing Christmas, I do still enjoy the snow and the decorations; who doesn’t? Snow sets the stage for Santa, and decorations make it all the merrier. Twinkling lights accompany almost every roof and dance in the cold winter gusts. The weather and feel of Christmas couldn’t be more perfect for the holiday; cold keeps us in the house and makes the fire feel all the more wonderful, while sugary treats and presents make our tummies and shelves feel good. Unfortunately for Christmas, my love for the day has diminished. I have grown up to see how selfish our society is during this time of year and now different we treat the holiday than it is actually supposed…

“Our Christmas tree was never even an inch under eight feet, and it took the whole family hours to decorate it. Each year one of us was honored by being allowed to place the angel at the top of the tree, while Father help us up in his strong arms.” (Pelzer 22). This passage is a simile because this is how we are in Christmas, our tree would be long and it takes us a whole hour to decorate it. We are allowed to place the star on top of the tree, and that is what’s amazing about it. This brought my attention and interested me because it showed how good the mother was to her children and hoe kind she treated them, because the name of the chapter called Good Times. It also shows that the kid remember how good she was and then how she turned…

In the beginning of the poem the mother is describing her daughter at Christmas time in a contented way. She says, "my daughter crackles paper/festoons herself with silver," which immediately shows readers that her daughter is at a very young age, an age where they believe blowing on trees will hopefully help make them live, and an age where decorating themselves with sparkly tinsel is all they wish for.…

María Rosa Menocal's The Ornament of the World examines the world of medieval Spain or al-Andalus in which Judaic, Islamic, and Christian cultural and religious elements coexistence in a “lost” golden age: Menocal writes to shed light on this time period that models tolerance and to attempt to paint a portrait of life in Medieval Spain that can inspire future generations. Whereas tradition histories of Arabic people follow the Abbasid dynasty, Menocal choses to follow the Umayyad prince to al-Andalus examining the seven century presence of Islam in Europe. Menocal attempts to debunk the myth that from 755 to 1031 Spain was “unenlightened, backward, and intolerant” as the word medieval suggests (10). Instead Menocal views the time period as one of a “complex culture of tolerance” in which Christians, Muslims, and Jews coexisted and created a society rich in literature, science, and the arts (11).…

How Was Ha’s Life Turned Inside Out Ha, a ten year old girl and her family have to flee their home in Saigon in the novel Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai. Ha’s story is very similar to that of other refugees around the world. Refugees are defined as “people who are residing outside their countries and cannot return due to a well-founded fear of persecution because of their race, religion, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group”. Ha’s story is similar to other refugees because all refugees need to relocate and learn a new culture. Some refugees get teased at school, neighborhoods or even stores.…

“I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all year,” (Ebenezer Scrooge). A Christmas Carol (Dickens 1832) is one of the most well known Christmas stories of all time. The story begins on Christmas Eve when Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three ghosts starting with his old business partner Marley, then followed by the Ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future. Each ghost that visited Scrooge takes him through his own past, present and future and shows him how his actions have affected those around him. Before the ghosts came to Scrooge he was very cold hearted. The spirits taught him to be positive and to always have Christmas spirit in his heart. When reviewing different genres for character, setting, and plot development in A Christmas Carol, there is substantial evidence to support that the novel genre is the most beneficial.…

Every year the hospitals auxiliary board puts up this pretty tree next to my desk, the Tree of Peace. There are volunteers that set up next to it selling Christmas ornaments and with a purchase you get a tag to hang on the tree, your choice of tag could be “ In memory of” or “ In honor of” and there is a tree light celebration and with a few carols, and punch and cookies afterwards.
