    “In the American school, they want to make Anglos out of all of us. They want to take our Spanish away and teach us English. Well, you don’t make anybody greater by making them less.” This, rather offending statement, by José Angel Gutierrez, a civil rights leader, shows what problematic topic bilingualism remains is in the US. Going back to the 19’Th century this paper deals with the Official English Movement, which aims to proclaim English as the sole official language of the US. Furthermore it describes the effects of that intention on bilingual education in the US from the 19’Th century until today. Which leads to the thesis that: The Official English Movement, even though not achieved its aim, has affected the education system of the US sustainable.
