In ancient Greek times morals and values were well in place as they are today, however the way they are viewed and acted out differ from today’s standards. There are two stories in the Odyssey that Homer uses to tell the reader about Greek values. Along with the moral values I will discuss the film The Odyssey and how close it was followed compared to the book.
In the movie The Odyssey, there were stories of showing the adventures of Odysseus. There were two main characters in the movie, Calypso and Circe that Odysseus would come into contact with. Both stories were portrayed in a way where Odysseus showed great morals and values toward his wife Penelope. In the Calypso story, he shows great value in his faithfulness to his wife. Faithfulness in Greek standards differs from today’s standards. In Greek days a person had only be faithful in the heart, as long as he chooses Penelope over anyone else he will remain faithful. The Circe story shows the loyalty between a commander and his troops, burial rights, hospitality, and the relationship between host and guest. When the story begins there is an analysis of how guests ought to be treated. Circe is an enchantress who welcomes some of Odysseus’s troops into her home for food and drink. After awhile Circe would turn the men into many different animals. One of the troops escapes to tell Odysseus about what has happen. Odysseus then makes his way to the house in order to save his men. On his way, Hermes comes to see him and gives him a drug to counteract the potion that he will receive from Circe. Odysseus is hesitant to receive the offer from Hermes because it is poisonous to mortals. Hermes then tells Odysseus that since I am giving this to you it will not harm you. When Odysseus finally reaches the house he is quickly taken in and given the potion, when nothing happens Circe is taken back. Odysseus then tells Circe that he wants his men turned back. Circe makes a deal with him that if he would go to bed with her... [continues]
