The Notebook Analysis
The story begins with Duke (Old Noah) and Allie in a nursing home. Duke goes to Allie’s room and begins reading to her a story that started July of 1940 at a Carnival in Seabrook, South Carolina. Noah and Allie meet for the first time and Noah falls instantly in love but Allie is not that quick. Noah and Allie are thrown together by mutual friends Fin and Sara. Allie, Noah, Sarah and Fin go to a movie and Allie and Noah walk home together and that is when the romance picks up. Allie falls for Noah. Allie and Noah spend almost every waking moment together, they fight they make up. One night Allie goes to Noah’s house and Noah decides to take Allie to the Windsor Plantion where they almost make love but are interrupted by Fin who tells them that Allie’s parents have the police out looking for her then they go back the her house and Noah over hears her mother calling him trash and goes to leave. Allie runs out after him and they end up getting into a huge fight and break up. Allie and Noah lose touch and Noah and Fin go off to War while Allie goes to school and volunteers to nurse injured soldiers back to health. Fin dies during the war. While Allie nursed a soldier named Lon Hammond Jr. and he asks her out. Lon won Allie over quickly and proposed to her. When Noah returns home from the war he finds out that his father has sold their home so that he can buy the home that he had always wanted to buy and fix up. While Allie is trying on her wedding gown she sees a picture of Noah in the paper next to the house he had told her all about and she decides that she needs to go check on him. She goes back to Seabrook. She drives to Noah’s home and they have dinner and Noah asks her to come back the next day. She comes back the next day and they row out in the lake, they talk about the summer that they spent together and it begins to rain.     By reading this book, I learned a lot about teenagers’ critical situations at juvenile hall. This book gave me a greater insight and deeper understanding of what their lives are like and the challenges they face in this place. I also learned that the legal system is not doing a great deal to help these young kids mend their lives. They are not being offered counseling or therapy which could help facilitate a great deal of things for them such as, getting a better orientation of a path for them to follow, dealing with the excessive amount of stress they face in a healthy way and learning tools for becoming effective members of society once they get out of that place. This book gave me a broader view of the factors that could have potentially contributed and played a big role in these teenagers getting engaged with gangs or committing these crimes. Most of these teenagers, to not say all, come from a very dysfunctional family where they were either battered by the father, had no positive role model to follow or no parents at all. Probably most of them joined gangs to feel they belonged to a group or where part of a family. I learned how miserable they feel by being in this place and the feelings they experience such as, loneliness, confusion, depression, no sense of personal worth and extreme stress. Many of them feel like they just want to die. All these feelings are not being managed by therapy or counseling but rather by just having regular nurses give them psych drugs which is very sad. I learned that these young kids are in great need of affection especially from their mothers and how much a compliment means to them. I also learned the importance of being tough as a survival skill in the prison setting. Many of these teenagers feel remorse for what they have done and would like to have a…

    Many events opened up the book in chapter 1 of The Great Gatsby, indicating that this book would appeal to many in a sense that it could be easily connected to. A significant quote from chapter 1 is a thought from Nick explaining his family heritage. Nick says “The Carraways are something of a clan, and we have a tradition that we're descended from the Dukes of Buccleuch, but the actual founder of my line was my grandfather's brother, who came here in fifty-one, sent a substitute to the Civil War, and started the wholesale hardware business that my father carries on to-day.” Most would see this as him describing his family heritage, but when read more in depth you realize that he is trying to illustrate that his family achieved the American Dream through persistence and hard work. He mentions “the Dukes of Buccleuch” to create his point that they sound like they come from a family who inherits the American Dream, but notifies the reader that his family achieved the American Dream by working towards it. As you read on you learn that Jay Gatsby inherited his wealth, giving Nick a bad perception of him due to the fact that Nick’s family has worked to achieve their wealth, yet to Gatsby the American Dream is just the pursuit of self pleasure. All in all, the quote relates well to the characters, but also to the theme that no matter how wealthy you are, you cannot buy yourself the happiness you can obtain through hard work towards the true American Dream.…
