Executive Summary
Shorter University is thriving Christian-based scholastic society that faces many difficulties with single parents who desire education, yet have no help with child care. “How are student-parents supposed to complete group assignments if they have to take care of a child? Not being able to participate in normal undergraduate activities only serves to further isolate them, which in turn leaves them at greater risk of dropping out and not earning a degree. With this problem growing, Shorter University has the potential of becoming the opposite of a thriving education society and becoming a weak society, with a higher percentage of college dropout rates, and a lack of understanding of the importance of education in the community. The Shorter Explorers Christian Childcare Center & Education(SECC) Project was developed in response to these issues, and hopes to decrease the vulnerable situation of single parents in the community.

The project provides a safe and educational environment where the skills and potential of every child is nurtured, while parents receive both their four hour education class and learning team groups a week in the Professional Studies Program. “If a person has the human capital to go to college, we’ve got to help them cultivate that potential,” he said.( ) “We need to encourage parents to be good parents, to be productive members of society and to be able to provide for their children. If you take away the opportunity for higher education, they’re not going to be able to provide. We don’t want to take away those opportunities. The consequences are just too great.” Parents can drop their children under the age of 12, in the evening and pick them up once the class is over. While in the evening care program, the children will engage in a number of educational activities that will provide them with exploratory learning for primary schools as well as homework/tutorial help for the older children. A fee of $100 per month is charged to the parents, to offset operating costs.
