The National Basketball Association, better known as the NBA started in the United States in 1949. Basketball started out as a small league and is now responsible for capturing the interests of billions of people, it is the fasting growing sport in the world. Unfortunately, when athletes are coming out of college with the interest of playing in the NBA, they need to understand that only 10% of them will make it to the big arena. However, in almost every corner of every country worldwide American athletes have the opportunity to travel overseas to play basketball. In order to take advantage of these opportunities the athlete must attain representation from a sports management company. This sports management company has the athlete’s career in the palm of their hands. The company is usually run by a lawyer based group which is certified to deal with very lengthy contract negotiations on behalf of the athlete. As it stands right now sports management companies prey on young aspiring athletes. They promise athletes help with building a personal portfolio, career and life planning, money management, insurance and estate planning, retirement, investment monitoring, and tax planning. In reality, most sports management companies only assist athletes with getting contracts to play for a basketball club over a short period of time, on the average five to eight years. Once they are no longer able to secure contracts for the athlete they drop them immediately with no support.
