The Nature-nurture Debate
The nature-nurture debate
For millennia thinkers have argued over what determines our personality and behavior : innate biology or life experiences (pinker,2004). This conflict is known as the nature nurture debate. The nature only view is that who we are comes from the inborn tendencies and genetically based traits.
Consider the scenario . you are at a restaurant and you see a young family trying to eat a meal. A two year old girl running in circles around a table and won’t sit down, despite her parent’s best effort . you mention to the parents that she is quite active .the exhausted mom answers quickly” yes, she was born that way”. other patrons of the restaurant might quietly disapprove of the parent’s inability to control the child. Chances are, the mom is right. The girl was probably active ,and there may be little they can do to get her to sit down. In fact, a great deal of evidence indicates that our personalities are influenced by genetic factors and remain consistent across the life span ( plomin and caspi,1999) .
The nurture only sides states that we are all essentially the same at birth ,and we are the product of our experiences. As we have consider, john Locke (1690;1959) popularize the idea that the newborn human mind is a blank slate on which the experience of life was written. This accumulation of experiences makes us who we are. This view means that anything is possible. You can be anything you want to be. this notion is very Western, very north American idea. It stands as the cornerstone of democracy, free will, and equality.(pinker, 2002).
Throughout this book, we will point out many cases in which environmental and genetic forces work together to shape who we are( ruther,2002). For example, in the process of learning and remembering, certain genes in the brain are turned on and off by what happens to us( kandel,2006). New connections between brain cells result from these changes in the genes. Consequently, the brains of the people and

    M1) Historically, some philosophers and theorists have argued that we are born to be the way we are. However, other theorists have argued that it is the way we are brought up and influenced by our surroundings that make us who we are. This argument is known as the nature v nurture debate and has been going on for many years as to this day, it is still not resolved. Nurture refers to the social, economic and environmental influences while nature refers to the genetic and biological influences. The way we look can be argued to be mainly due to nature as the genes we inherit from our parents provide a basis of how we look. An example of this could be when people say, “Don't you look like your mum/dad!”. Genetic inheritance can determine our eye colour, natural hair colour, whether we have straight or curly hair and how tall we are. Also, we can inherit certain diseases that can have a serious impact on our health. However, as we get older, we can make our own decisions on how we look and change our appearance. In today's society, it is proven to be popular that people change their hair colour, get tattoos and piercings. Also, there are many cosmetic procedures available to change our appearance. For example, eating junk food and not exercising regularly can lead to obesity. The environment we are brought up in and the experiences we have influence our health which contributes to our physical development. An example of how nature-nurture affect our physical development is; we may carry genes that increase our risk of developing type 2 diabetes, but if we eat a healthy diet and get sufficient exercise, we may not develop the disease. Also, the genes we inherit can affect our health. For example, a daughter is more likely to have breast cancer if her mother has had it. However, our life choices and the environment we live in can increase our chances.…

The nature versus nurture debate revolves around the contributions of genetic factors and environmental factors to human development. The primary method of attempting to determine which of these effects human development the most has been cross-cultural studies. Cross-cultural studies are studies conducted across more than one culture, based on the assumption that the differences between cultures genetically are less that the differences within a culture. Through cross-cultural studies, Psychologists are able to determine whether nature or nurture has the paramount effect upon the three major segregations of human development, Cognitive, Moral and Physical development. Development can be defined as the growth or advancement of a specific area, in this case, the growth or advancement of the body and its mental capabilities. Physical development refers to the changes that occur in the size, shape, proportion, appearance, motor skills and co-ordination of humans. Moral development refers to the changes in reasoning about moral issues such as the value of human life/property, honesty and social rules. Cognitive development refers to the changes in cognitive abilities such as memory, language and imagination. Cross-cultural studies allow researchers to study the influences of environment (nurture) and genetic factors (Nature) like they would be able to do in a twin study, but without the added inconvenience twin studies cause. Numerous inconveniences come with twin studies such as low availability of twins willing to participate and also finding twins that have been reared apart so that their development cannot be due to the same environmental factors. Although cross-cultural studies do have their limitations, their contribution to the nature versus nurture debate within society is undeniable as they strongly emphasise how imperative environment is in human development.…
