Academic Paragraph

James Dashner’s novel ‘The Maze Runner’ displays trust, bravery and friendship in times of immense crisis and doubt. ‘In times of crisis human beings individually do not react well but with our combined minds, we pull together to survive even with unfathomable obstacles in our paths’. In the very first chapters of the novel the Glader’s displayed a large amount of perseverance. Thomas could not comprehend the details of his situation but the Gladers quickly brought him up to speed. They had all woken up in the Glade with very few memories of their previous lives, but they knew one thing, survival.
‘Out there’s the Maze, everything we do- our whole life, Greenie- revolves around the Maze. Every lovin’ second of every lovin’ day we spend in honour of the Maze, tryin’ to solve something that’s not shown us it has a bloody solution ya know?(James Dashner, The Maze Runner pg.38).’
The Gladers had all been individually dropped into this ‘Utopia’ with few resources but collaboratively they made a life. They created a system of various jobs to survive; slopper, bricknick, bagger, track-hoe, runner and several more. These codenames stood for jobs such as butcher, gardener, builder and most importantly the ‘Runners’ that scoured the maze for a means of escape. Individually these boys would not last a second but collectively they created a society with civility and rules. The span of time that the boys spent in the maze also supports the amount of perseverance they held, they had been trapped in the maze for over 2 years. Individually boys that age would not last a week without the supervision of adults and society but the combined power of all the boys allowed them to persevere.
Furthermore the Gladers had trust and friendship which also enabled them to survive so long. ‘Two years, I’ve been here, lost a lot of friends but trust is needed if ya to stay alive with us (pg.45).’ The trust the boys had for each

One day a girl named Teresa was sent there, Thomas had some type of connect with her. after she arrived weird things started happening, and the “end” was coming so they worked together along with the other Gladers to find the code and escape the maze due to his memories returning after the changing. There was a plethora of figurative language in these books, The first example is from Counting by 7s when Willow and Pattie and doing Dells laundry “It takes us three trips to haul the mountain down to the laundry room”. This is hyperbole because they weren’t actually crying a mountain to the laundry…

Riva’s mantra, “As long as there is life, there is hope” (Sender 254) helps her to convince herself that she is in a high place in society. When Riva repeats herself over and over, perhaps she is is trying to connect with their higher self, and raise her self esteem. Interestingly enough, in Flowers For Algernon, the author’s main character, Charlie Gordon, undergoes a variety of scientific tests repeatedly, in which the he uses the language of hope and love: “The path I choose through the maze makes me what I am.”( Keyes 288.) The author's use of the maze both literally and figuratively connotes that Charlie is physically going through the maze and mentally through the maze of…

Life is the journey, the inevitable journey, and the experiences thoughout life, the journeys within the journey, are the planned and unplanned experiences that change people and are a huge part of a person’s moral and personal growth. In the novella “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad, the physical journey through the Congo is parallel to the inner journey of the main character Marlow. Similarly, the poem “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost, relates on both a literal and metaphoric level to the concept of a journey. The individuals’ creation of their own direction on a journey is what leads to the most startling growth. Furthermore, a true journey must always have the unpredictable, because it is through the individual’s response to the unknown that growth occurs.…

Amir’s quest to redeem himself makes up the heart of the novel. Early on, Amir strives to redeem himself in Baba’s eyes, primarily because his mother died giving birth to him, and he feels responsible. To redeem himself to Baba, Amir thinks he must win the kite-tournament and bring Baba the losing kite, both of which are inciting incidents that set the rest of the novel in motion. The more substantial part of Amir’s search for redemption, however, stems from his guilt regarding Hassan. That guilt drives the climactic events of the story, including Amir’s journey to Kabul to find Sohrab and his confrontation with Assef. The moral standard Amir must meet to earn his redemption is set early in the book, when Baba says that a boy who doesn’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up to anything. As a boy, Amir fails to stand up for himself. As an adult, he can only redeem himself by proving he has the courage to stand up for what is right.…
