The Many Themes of Beowulf
There are multiple themes throughout the story Beowulf such as bravery, loyalty, courage, or to just never give up. But one theme that seems to stand out more would be Good vs. Evil. Beowulf is the epic hero of this poem because he embraces all the characteristics that a hero should, such as courage, devotion and strength, both physically and mentally. Beowulf is the classic hero in most stories we read today. The universal theme is good always conquers evil, not only does Beowulf fight for good, but he also represents it in himself. The monster Grendel and his mother symbolize the true evil, just looking at them leaves you with an impression of fear and sin "He strode quickly across the inlaid floor, snarling and fierce: His eyes gleamed in darkness, burned with a gruesome Light." (P.1, L.15-18). This is a universal theme because this story follows the same lesson of many other stories throughout history, in which good comes out victorious over wickedness. It seems as if this poem references a lot to the bible almost like Beowulf is representing God and Grendel and his mother represent the devil. Good vs. evil still plays a huge role in our lives today. With our soldiers out at war representing the good, are fighting the evil for the bad things that they did. Not only do we face that but we also deal with every day decisions, like deciding whether the decisions we are making are the right ones or the wrong ones. Beowulf is a well-known character for the qualities he represented, probably why his social status seemed pretty high through the eyes of his people. Most of them even believed that Beowulf overcame many challenges that built him up to become so strong and courageous. He even often showed he could be sneaky and crafty when dealing with others.
