Abuse is something that many people undergo in their lives. There are two kinds of abuse, physical and emotional, and both types of abuses can cause people to lose hope and self-confidence in themselves, which can change their lives forever. In the novel The Lottery Rose, by Irene Hunt, is about a boy that suffers from the two types of abuse in many ways. A boy named Georgie, who is seven and a half years old, loses hope in himself when his alcoholic mother and her abusive boyfriend abuse Georgie both physically and emotionally. Georgie undergoes an immense character change when he is transferred to a positive environment, thus making Georgie have hope, trust, and love for the people around him.

There are many negative causes and effects in Georgie’s life because of the disapproving support system, and the negative environment around him. As a result, Georgie goes through many arduous events in his life that cause him no to have love, hope, and trust in practically no one around them. Georgie doesn’t have hope in himself because of the emotional and physical abuse around him. Georgie is abused emotionally by his mother (Rennie Burgess) because she is an alcoholic, and Georgie is physically abused by Steve (Georgie’s mother’s boyfriend). For example, Steve once beat Georgie with a leg of a chair so horrifically that he left Georgie unconscious, with a broken arm, and with cuts and bruises (this caused Georgie to go to the hospital). Georgie’s mother abuses him emotionally, because she is an alcoholic and this doesn’t let Georgie’s mother spend time with him and to have a normal seven and a half year old boy. Rennie Burgess once told Georgie “ Steve didn’t like it that I was saddled with you when he took me for his girlfriend so he aint ever been fond of you from the start. You and Steve ain’t ever goin’ to be close friends. “ Georgie lost love for the people around him and for himself because he was angry, because no one loved him and because of his negative...
