The Leading Causes of Obesity
Did you know that 1 in 5 Americans is obese? America is one of the fattest countries in the World. Serving sizes are getting larger in proportions and are getting more and more unhealthy. It also been said by Jenny Murphy that about 300,000 Americans die each year form obesity related causes. But why, why we getting so obese? Americas obesity is sky rocketing by the effects of high glucose, fructose, and sucrose consumption, having unhealthy food so accessible to the society, and knowing the outcomes of unhealthy consumption but choosing to continually eat very unhealthy.

Glucose, fructose, and sucrose consumption in foods is one of the leading causes of obesity. According to Dr. William Rice, the average American eats over 120 lbs of refined sweeteners per year. Refined sugars contain glucose, fructose, and sucrose. Glucose is energy that goes to your liver which transfers to your muscles which then eventually turns into fat (Kliener 118). Corn syrup is a great example of pure glucose. Corn syrup gives you energy the you all of a sudden have a “crash” where you have energy and then about an our later you are tired, which is not healthy for your body. Fructose is the main vein of soft drinks, which have about 46 grams of sugars. Not only does fructose make you fat, it messes with your hormones that makes your body react tot sugars in an unhealthy manner according to Susan Kliener Ph.D, R.D. These sugars and making America fat. Sucrose is your common white table sugar you use almost every day to add to your foods. This sugar is very unhealthy for you because it is stripped of all natural vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that comes natural. All these elements are there for and natural and proper digestion. According to Dr. John Yudkin of Queens College, London, “all nutritional needs can be met in full without having to take a singe spoonful of white of brown or raw sugar”.
