The Jacksonian Era, 1824-1845

Chapter 10 introduces the expansion of democratic ideals during the presidency of Andrew Jackson. Topics covered in the chapter include the rise of the second national political party system; the expansion of democratic political rights to white males; the limited meaning of Jacksonian democracy for women and African Americans; the revival of evangelical Christianity with the Second Great Awakening; the growing debate over the issue of slavery; and the rise of the Whig Party.

• Describe the emergence of universal white male suffrage.
Since Americans were victorious in the American Revolutionary War, the ideology of becoming a democracy has become a very significant part of everyday life. The Jacksonian Era in the 1820’s had an emerging working class of people like workers, clerks, and small tradesmen. As they made up a large portion of Americans, they felt that they deserved the right to vote, even though their occupations did not consist of owning any land to be able to do them. Even the lower class felt that they deserved this right because they wanted to ensure that they could vote for the candidate that would make them prosper the most economically. Another large portion of the universal white male suffrage was the controversial idea at that time that all white men should be treated equally. Many argued that equality of men is the only way to keep a republican government in check.
• Identify the components of the Second Great Awakening and its impact.
During the time of 1800 to 1840, Methodists and Baptists spread a spiritual and enthusiastic revival known as the Second Great Awakening. Christianity spread to all regions in America, especially to the common man and woman. Making Christianity more interesting to the common person, religious preaches involved theatrical plays that involved and fascinated the audience, resulting in more people converting. The greatest impact on the people was on women and African Americans. Women were allowed to participate in society more, performing preaches that only men would perform before. For African Americans, they also held meetings of their own and preached themselves, allowing them to feel that they had spiritual equality in America. For democracy, it was enforced that every man had one vote and should be able to use it.
• Explain the appeal of Andrew Jackson and describe the change in political campaign tactics during the early nineteenth century.
Andrew Jackson was seen as a candidate that would try to preserve and protect the rights of the people as a whole. At this time, political campaign tactics changed from being about issues to personalities. Jackson’s committees personally met with the American people to speak to them about the election and their candidates. People began wearing pins with images of the president who they wanted to become president, and parades became spectacular for the future possible presidents. Farmers were also tempted to wondrous food and alcohol as means of hospitality of the candidates. • Discuss the results of the 1828 election in terms of regional, class, and religious support for each candidate.
