Abstract
Third-party logistics (3PL) defines a relationship between a shipper and third party which, compared with basic services, has more customised offerings, encompasses a broader number of service functions and is characterised by a longer-term, more mutually beneficial relationship. 3PL generally fall into two broad categories. The first group examines the willingness of shippers (users), and the respective benefits and costs to them, of using 3PL services, whereas the second group concentrates on devising winning strategies for 3PL providers to better fulfill the requirements of users. This research attempts to provide new insights on the relationship between 3PL providers and shippers by examining the impact of the performance of 3PL service providers on the user logistics and export performance of manufacturers and traders. Third party logistics (3PL) is a business dynamic of growing importance all over the world. However, in India, some domestic and multinational companies are trying to establish themselves in this sector. This research is an attempt to provide a 3PL perspective in India. This research primary focuses on three major issues – present extent of usage of third party logistics services, reasons for outsourcing and impact of usage of third party logistics services on business results. This research descibes that most of the 3PL users are satisfied with the current level of services provided by 3PL service providers as it has led to a positive impact on business results. As a result, the usage of third party logistics services is likely to increase substantially in the future.
