The History Boys
What elements of Bennetts own educational experiences has he used in “the History Boys”?
Bennett says that he was made fun of at school for coming to school in a suit on the day of his exams. He says he did this because he thought the exam was an occasion and he must rise to it. This show us how he felt towards his exams and probably shows how some of the boys in his book would have felt like when taking their exams. This shows how important he thinks exams are and this theme will probably reflect in the book.
Bennett then goes to talk about taking his finals at oxford, this is where the boys in the book are aiming for and he has already been there and knows what it’s like to pass so he will probably talk about the emotions that he felt when he passed. Bennett talks about his Head teacher and describes him as a “snob” and as we already know that the Head teacher in the book is a snob. Bennett being from a working class family and the boys in the books being from a working class family then he will probably share his experience of feeling like a second class citizen compared to the boys from Eton or the other private schools down south. Bennett says that the “History Boys” has nothing to do with his “contemporaries” but this is hard to believe as the subject of the book is so close to his life. He could be telling the truth or trying to hide the embarrassment of whatever happens in the book. Bennett goes to chapel and says in the play that Scripps also goes to chapel this could be show the subtle differences between the boys in the play. He also talks about his teacher getting upset with his class which he also uses in the book. Bennett being a homosexual is also reflected in one of the boys in the book so Bennett’s sexuality is also in the book so it’s like the boys in the book all make up Bennett rather than just one. Bennett felt like he wasted his time at university although I doubt we will see the characters in the book reach university because the book

In the book, it talks about people going into World War 2. In Chapter 13 Gene says “The Jeeps, The Troops, The Sewing Machines, were drawn up next to…” (Knowles 197). This shows the environment they were in, it was all war necessities, and machines to help the soldiers in the war. This showed that this fear that characters were in and shows how this helps them learn more and eventually reach the point where they have came of age. On Page 73 it says “Five of the younger teachers were missing, gone into war” (Knowles 73). This Quote shows just how serious the situation was at Devon. This meant that the kids will also have to act serious, because there was no time for foolishness, they were in a tense and scary situation.. Now that there is less time to be foolish, they have been learning about the real world more, and that has led to their coming of age. In the book the students were being enlisted into the Army, and everyone had to follow rules. Even people who usually break rules, wanted to join the army. This Boy's Life, set in America in the 1950’s, is a compelling memoir by Tobias Wolff, whom recreates the frustrations and cruelties faced throughout his adolescence, as he fights for identity and self-respect. During this period of time, America underwent major changes in the political and economic spheres, which in turn were responsible for its social makeover. Society in this time was geared toward family; marriage and children being part of the national agenda. The 1950’s was also an age of male dominance, where even if women worked, their assumed proper place was at home. Throughout the memoir, the protagonist, young Jack Wolff, makes it difficult for the reader to feel much affection towards him, as his actions prove to be troublesome and unruly. However, as the memoir progresses, Jacks struggle reveal the reasons for his actions which sequentially shape his character, providing the readers with understanding and sympathy towards his inexorable situation. The fraudulent lies and deceitful ways of Jack can be frustrating upon the reader; though we come to realise that he does this in order to be accepted by the people around him. Jack also engages in fights and unfaithfully betrays his best friend Arthur, although it becomes evident that he only does this in order to gain Dwight’s approval of him. The lack of a real father figure in Jack’s life has a profound impact on him and his desperate attempt to develop his identity, which further supports the readers’ emotions of sympathy towards him.…

"I found my students progressively more ignorant, inattentive, inarticulate," states a professor from Southern Connecticut State. One scene in The History Boys where Alan Bennett uses comedy is when during a general studies lesson with Hector he allows the boys to act, in French, as though they were in a brothel this then leads to Dakin with his trousers down, which in normal circumstances would be inappropriate in a classroom. The function of this scene is to show the relationship between the boys and Hector, and how they feel comfortable with each other.…
