THE HIDDEN TRUTH OF COSMETIC PRODUCTS

In the United States, cosmetics are used by girls at an increasingly young age. Cosmetics are substances used to enhance the appearance or odour of the human body. Cosmetics include skin-care creams, lotions and powders. Cosmetic is also known as ‘make up’, which refers primarily to various products like branded promotional items intended to change the user’s appearance. There are two types of cosmetics, that are decorative cosmetics and care cosmetics. Women and men buy cosmetic products with the intention of enhancing their looks, but unfortunately those products sometimes result in unwanted side effects. Therefore, the disadvantages of using cosmetic products come from health, community, environment, and financial aspects.

Firstly, the disadvantage of using cosmetic products came from health aspect. The use of cosmetic products could bring about allergy problems, cancer and miscarriage. Allergy implies by itching, often attended by redness and hot and bumpy rash in the skin. Allergy occurs because of layering and combining too many products that expose skin to a mixture of substances. This is because the cosmetic contains AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid). On top of that, cosmetic products can cause cancer. For example, skin cancer. According to Wong Mei Chan in her book ‘Malaysia Health Guide’, skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of skin cells and may first be noticed as an abnormal growth or localised change in skin colour, texture or appearances called a lesion. All ingredients of the products are not tested for long-term positive results. Only it is tested that they would be no immediate harmful effect of the cosmetics. Besides, chemical in foods, cosmetics and cleaning products are responsible to change the gender of infants and increase the risk of cancer and non-fertilised in late of their life.
