The Heritage Assessment
When assessing a patient the culture of the patient must be taken into consideration in order for affective teaching and learning to occur. The cultural competence in the delivery of healthcare services is a model that views cultural competence as an ongoing model and consist of five parts. Cultural awareness is the self-examination of one’s own culture. Cultural knowledge is obtaining information from different cultural and ethnic groups. Cultural skill is the ability to collect cultural information about a patient’s illness accurately performs a culturally based physical assessment. For example assessing jaundice in African American patients you would look at their sclera before looking at their skin. The next part is cultural encounters; this encourages the nurse to engage in interactions with patients from different diverse backgrounds. The final concept is cultural desire which is the desire to become more culturally aware. (Campinha-Bacote, 2002, p. 181-182)If all of these factors are in place the nurse would be able to do very comprehensive assessments, taking into account the patient’s heritage and beliefs? The student was instructed to perform the Heritage assessment tool on her culture and evaluate the results. The student is family oriented with roots in the south. Both of her parents and grandparents were born in the south. The student lived in a traditional nuclear family consisting of mother, father, and siblings. Family was very important to the student. She grew up around grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, and she remains close to them till this day. The student reflects on fond memories of being with her grandmother as she prepared delicious meals for her family. They were not the healthiest meals in retrospect but they were good. The...
