The Happy Prince
The Happy Prince
(By Oscar Wilde)

The Happy Prince is a story written by author Oscar Wilde and was published in 1888. The story talks about a statue that can talk and then asks a swallow to do tasks for him. It is a simple yet meaningful story; therefore, this essay will first be about the summary of the story then it will discuss the symbolism of the statue of the Happy Prince, next it will show the contribution of the statue in the story, and the last paragraph will be the reflection of the whole story. The story took place in a city where the statue of the happy prince, which was coated in gold, was placed in the middle of the city. One day a little swallow went to the city and then stayed on the statue. Night after night, the statue of the Happy Prince would ask the swallow to take the valuable things on his body and give them to the poor people until the statue had no jewel left. In the end, the swallow died, the statue was removed, and the swallow’s body and the statue’s heart were taken to heaven. When the prince was still alive, he lived a happy life without knowing any misery outside his castle, but when he died and was built as a statue, he was portrayed as an empathetic prince. From the beginning till the end of the story, the statue of the happy prince was always thinking of his people, and since he was placed in the middle of the city, he could see everything from there. He would then ask the swallow, which was the only companion he had, to take his jewels and give them to the poor, and this is a qualification that a leader should have. The Happy Prince thought of his people as the most important thing in his life and he would do anything to make their lives better.

There are many contributions from the Happy Prince statue as it is written in the story. The first contribution is the ruby on the sword of the statue that he told the swallow to give it to a woman whose kid was ill. The others are the sapphire eyes that were later given to a

Machiavelli expressed in The Prince that he believed that a prince or ruler should be one that appeared to be very compassionate and caring towards others, one that others or the subjects could truly rely on and trust as well as one that is appears to be kind and righteous, however this should all be an illusion. He believed that princes should only appear to be this way so that the subjects or the public would be more submissive to his rule. He felt that the more respect that a prince gained would mean the more likely his subjects would take his side and be more willing to protect him and his honor during a war or battle. Machiavelli also believed that it was okay for a ruler to break their word to their people if that said ruler was at a…

    The Young King Summary

    • 308 Words
    • 1 Page

The story "The Young King" is about a prince who is about to be crowned King. Yet, he never lived the life of a price before. This prince is an unclaimed son of the now dead King and, as a rule, he is the heir to the throne. Once he is brought to court, he is given all the rich luxuries of a future king. Yet, the night before his crowning, the boy has three nightmares involving the evils of Death, Avarice, the Plague, and Fever. In these dreams the young future King is clearly told that a lot of less fortunate people had to work hard at creating his jewels, and many sacrifice their lives so that the king could have all the things he needed on time for his coronation. Hence, the day of his coronation the boy wore the robes of a peasant, a stick instead of a sceptre, and a crown made of twigs. People around him felt ashamed of him and treated him disrespectfully, saying that he is embarrassing the upper classes. Yet, by this sacrifice something seemed to take place: The sun rose, and the boy's meagre clothing seemed to shine with the colors of the church glass. The stick grew into a beautiful vine, and in all it was as if the sacrifice showed the true beauty of his spirit. Even the bishop noticed this, and gave validity to the goodness of spirit versus the superficiality of riches.…
