1. D.B is Holden’s older brother who writes a volume of short stories that Holden admires very much, but Holden feels that D. B. prostitutes his talents by writing for Hollywood movies. D.B. is the height of phoniness in Holden's mind because he's sacrificed his art (writing stories) for money. 2. Holden is kicked out for failing too many classes. He ultimately chooses to leave early to get away from all the phonies who are making him miserable. 3. Holden is being ostracized by the fencing team for leaving the foils on the subway. Holden ostracized Pencey prep because he thinks everybody there is a phony and he hates phonies. Holden hates cliques because they are private groups separate from everyone else. Holden was also too "yellow" to join this one fraternity at pencey. 4. In a way, Holden is just trying to find himself in the real world. He leaves Pencey, only to discover how harsh it is. He wants to save other kids from the harsh reality of adulthood, by being the catcher in the rye. 5. He said that Mr.Spencer smells like Vicks Nose Drops and is a bad throw. Holden also thinks Mrs. Spencer like him, although he is not sure. 6. Holden passes English.

7. Holden sees Mr. Spencer right before he leaves because Mr. Spencer was one of the few teachers that Holden liked and felt he could connect to. He does end up regretting the visit because it causes him to think twice about leaving school. He realizes that he's going to miss Mr. Spencer. 8. Because Mr. Thurmer lectured him about how “life is a game” and that one should “play it according to the rules” just before he expelled him. Mr. Spencer thought that Dr. Thurmer was correct, but Holden was upset because he thinks that life is only a game if you are on the right side. 9. He read Holden an essay that Holden had written about the Egyptians, and he was annoyed that he made him read it out loud. 10.
