The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald

            The book I was given was The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. A book that was better than any of these Days of Our Lives soaps. In this paper I’m going to tell you a little about the author, the setting, the characters, the plot and the climax of this book. Behind every good book there is always a great author.
              Fitzgerald just like the narrator of the book grew up in the Midwest and went to college in East. Born in Minnesota in 1896, he attended Princeton University and served in the army during World War I, he was stationed in Alabama when he met and fell in love with his wife Zelda Sayre. The couple being very wealthy had to support their extravagant lifestyle, so Fitzgerald wrote a series of popular novels and stories in the 1920’s. In 1930 Zelda began to suffer from and mental illness, so in 1937 Fitzgerald went to work as a screenwriter in Hollywood to pay bills and medical expenses of hers. When Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby he was disappointed in the sales of the book published in 1925, today the novel is considered a modern masterpiece.
            The Great Gatsby evokes American life in 1920’s, the era that began following World War I and ended with the Great Depression in 1929. A time that is known as the Jazz Age or The Roaring Twenties… The setting of this book takes place in New York City on the West Egg and East Egg fractional places that the author has created in New York City. Some of the story takes place in the Valley of Ashes a place the author portrays as being the lower part of New York City where the poor live.
The key characters in this book are Nick who is the narrator of the story. Nick is a guy who moved to New York to work in the bonds business. Nick lives in West Egg.   We also meet Tom and Daisy Buchanan, who live on East Egg. Daisy is Nick's cousin and Tom is an acquaintance from Nick's days in college.
