Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald represents different styles of American literature from the Puritans to the modernists. These literary trends include Puritan, Age of Reason, Romanticism, Realism and Modernism. These are the styles that Gatsby represents in the novel.

To begin with, Gatsby represents the Puritan literary style for one specific reason. The Puritan writing style focused on divine mission to settle in America. In Gatsby, Gatsby has a mission of his own to live the American Dream. At the beginning of the story he is nobody, he is not rich. He loses Daisy because of that. Then he sets a mission for himself that he will become rich and upper class person. He’s this mission is just like the mission of the Puritan’s. In this way Gatsby represents the writing trend of the Puritans.

Another writing trend that Gatsby represents is the Age of Reason. In age of reason it included thinking and how things that you needed to achieve were achieved. For example, in the novel Gatsby makes a schedule for himself for self improvement. “ Rise from bed………………………………….. 6.00 A.M. ……………..

Study needed inventions………………………..7.00-9.00 ” ….. (pg. 173)”
In this part of the text from the novel it is shown how Gatsby makes a schedule for him self and the looks at what he needs to do to improve him and how he will do it. This thinking process which is talking place in Gatsby’s mind shows that Gatsby represents the Age of Reason.

Romantic era is another writing trend which is shown by Gatsby. This era is defined as having everything being perfect and living happily without any problem. In the novel Tom Buchanan’s living style represents this era because he has really big house. He has no problem with money and where he got it from unlike Gatsby, who gets his money from bootlegging business. He is also a really smart person because we were told in the novel that he was graduated of Yale University. This perfect life style of Tom Buchanan represents the Romantic...
